Tech Line Summary Article March 2016 BTS 151101 Version 2 A/T DTC P287C After TCM Replacement AFFECTED VEHICLES 2016 MDX and 2015−16 TLX with 9-speed A/T EDITOR’S NOTE: This article replaces the one posted in November 2015 to extend the article’s shelf life. The issues covered are still being addressed. Replacement TCMs don’t come with trim data. After installation, you need to run a teach-in (hydraulic pressure characteristic calibration) procedure with the HDS. The problem is that A/T DTC P287C (transmission adaptive values not learned) is set, which prevents teach-in. This happens because the TCM is programmed to look for trim data any time the ignition is cycled. If the TCM doesn’t see that trim data, it sets A/T DTC P287C. If any DTCs are set, the TCM won’t initiate teach-in and, as a result, can’t learn the trim data. It’s a classic catch-22 situation. Fortunately, there’s an easy way around this. First, clear the DTC, but don’t cycle the ignition when prompted. Instead, select the Exit Diagnostic System icon on the HDS and restart the teach-in procedure from the Adjustment Menu. The procedure will then complete normally. © 2016 American Honda Motor Co., Inc. – All Rights Reserved Page 1 of 1
