Subject
Cleaning Ohm Dial (Open Card) Fuel Level Senders
Release Date
7/2/2012
Condition
Analysis of warranty parts returns illustrates that many fuel senders that have been replaced could have been
returned to functionality by being cleaned instead.
Chassis Affected
All Kenworth models with ohm dial or open card style fuel senders as depicted in the title graphic and in the
procedure, attached.
Action
In repairs where diagnostics indicate failed fuel level sensor function and the sensor is the ohm dial open card
style depicted, the dial face should be cleaned and the failure verified before the component is replaced.

Whether a fuel level gauge failure is due to a defective sender or a sender that required cleaning only,
Kenworth will pay SRT 003-035 for 0.2 hours to perform cleaning/failure verification as described in the
attached procedure. Other standard warranty considerations apply.
Note: Fuel sender claims require parts returns and if failure analysis indicates that the sender could be
repaired by cleaning, the parts portion of the claim will be denied.

Background
Changes in fuel chemistry, including Ultra Low Sulfur, Biodiesel and additives can leave residue on the fuel
sensor resistance card, interrupting the card surface resistance and the signal transmitted to the fuel level
gauge. The procedure with this bulletin is necessary to distinguish product failures from product
contamination and performing this procedure should be normal practice and it is a warranty requirement for
diagnosed fuel sensor failures.
