Dealers have replaced Steering Gears to successfully fix the issue. Cause: An O-ring in the Transfer Pipes can in some cases deform, which can result in power steering fluid leak from the mating surface between the Steering Gear and Transfer Pipes. Action: When a PAS fluid leak is suspected from the Steering Gear Transfer Pipes it should be noted that these parts must be replaced and not the Steering Gear, following the outlined procedure. Please refer to the Jaguar Parts Catalogue for part numbers. 1.Diagnosis – First confirm the area of leakage. ·Check the PAS fluid is set to the correct level in the reservoir, refill if necessary. ·Clean off the Steering Gear housing. ·Start the engine and operate the steering from lock to lock with the vehicle lifted off the ground. ·Confirm that the PAS fluid leak originates from the steering rack transfer pipes. Content 2.Removal ·*Cleanliness. Care should be taken throughout not to introduce contamination into the steering system. (See JLR workshop manual for correct working methods). ·Put the car on a ramp, remove the engine under tray and drain the PAS system. (JLR workshop manual procedure on Topix). ·Loosen the steering rack transfer pipe unions on the main housing of steering rack. ·Remove the transfer pipe latch plate retaining bolt and the latch plate on the pinion housing of the steering rack. ·Remove both transfer pipes from the steering rack pinion housing and the main rack housing. 3.Fitting new transfer pipe assemblies ·Apply non-silicongrease or additive-free Vaseline (do not use PAS fluid) andevenly spread onto the circumference of the O-rings of new transfer pipes. *Take care not to get the lubricant into the hydraulic system. ·Carefully push transfer pipes into main housing and pinion housing of the steering rack. ·By hand, screw transfer pipe unions into the main housing of steering rack. ·Refit the latch plate and latch plate retaining bolt to the pinion housing of the steering rack. http://topix.jaguar.jlrint.com/topix/service/archive/473239/index 4/16/2014 TOPIx - SSM71811 - Steering Gear Transfer Pipe change Page 2 of 2 ·Torque the transfer pipe latch plate retaining bolt on the pinion housing to 12+/-1Nm. ·Torque the transfer pipe unions on the main steering rack housing to 7-0/+3NM. ·Refill PAS system with new fluid. Clean off any spilled fluid and bleed the system (see JLR procedure on Topix). ·Recheck for leaks on PAS system. ·Refit the engine under tray (see JLR workshop manual procedure on Topix). http://topix.jaguar.jlrint.com/topix/service/archive/473239/index 4/16/2014
