Page 1 of 4 SB-10059088-6013 SI B32 03 14 Steering and Wheel Alignment July 2015 Technical Service This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI 32 03 14 dated October 2014. designates changes to this revision SUBJECT Power-Assisted Steering Failure MODEL F22 (2 Series Coupe) F30 (3 Series Sedan) F31 (3 Series Sport Wagon) F32 (4 Series Coupe) F34 (3 Series Gran Turismo) F36 (4 Series Gran Coupe) F80 (M3 Sedan) F82 (M4 Coupe) F83 (M4 Convertible) SITUATION The power-assisted steering fails with a warning lamp in the instrument cluster or a check control message in the Central Information Display. In some cases, the Dynamic Stability Control warning lamp (DSC) in the instrument cluster may also be illuminated. CAUSE Failure of the power-assisted steering may be caused by various software-related issues. The following codes may be stored in the fault memory of the Electric Power Steering (EPS): Scenario 1: 0x4823E1 Scenario 2: 0x4823CB/0x4823CC Scenario 3: 0x4823D2 and/or 0x4823EC Scenario 4: 0x48239C (DSC warning lamp lights up in the instrument cluster) Scenario 5: No communication with the EPS is possible (not accessible using diagnostics) Scenario 6: 0x4823EE and 0x4823C2 CORRECTION Run diagnostics with the latest version of ISTA/D to read stored fault codes Scenario 1: (0x4823E1) https://www.bmwtis.net/tiscode/cgi-bin/bulletin.aspx?sie_path=/tsb/bulletins/htm_store/246... 8/6/2015 Page 2 of 4 Program the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.51.2 (target I-Level F020-13-11-502), or a more recent version. Scenario 2: (0x4823CB / 0x4823CC) Program the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.52.0 (target I-Level F020-14-03-502), or a more recent version. Scenario 3: (0x4823D2 and/or 0x4823EC) Program the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.51.2 (target I-Level F020-13-11-502), or a more recent version. Scenario 4: (0x48239C) For this fault code memory, the DSC warning lamp lights up in the instrument cluster. The power-assisted steering is working, but the DSC is not fully functional (although ABS is still operational). Program the vehicle with ISTA/P 2.51.2 (target I-Level F020-13-11-502), or a more recent version. Scenario 5: (No communication with the EPS possible) The vehicle cannot communicate with the EPS (not accessible using diagnostics). Disconnect the battery for at least ten minutes and then reconnect it. The EPS is then accessible again. Then program the vehicle using ISTA/P 2.52.0 (target I-Level F020-14-03-502), or a more recent version. Scenario 6: (0x4823EE and 0x4823C2) Perform the "Starting Steering" test plan (AT3244_EPS_ZF1_INBTR) from the Service Functions and then switch the ignition off and on again. Read the fault code memory again, and then clear it. Do not replace the EPS unit for this condition. Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software. For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet / Aftersales Portal / Service / Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming. Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10). WARRANTY INFORMATION Covered under the terms of the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks or the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program. Defect Code: 32 13 02 14 00 Labor Operation: Labor Allowance: Description: 00 00 006 Refer to KSD2 Performing “vehicle test” (with vehicle diagnosis system – checking faults) Refer to KSD2 Connect an approved battery charger/power supply (indicated in KSD2 as “Charging battery”) Refer to KSD2 Programming/encoding control unit (s) And: 61 21 528 And: 61 00 730 https://www.bmwtis.net/tiscode/cgi-bin/bulletin.aspx?sie_path=/tsb/bulletins/htm_store/246... 8/6/2015 Page 3 of 4 Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead. Or: Scenario 5 Also claim: Labor Operation: Labor Allowance: Description: 61 20 900 Refer to KSD2 Disconnecting and connecting battery negative cable Vehicle Programming and Coding If a control module was working properly and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization, please claim this additional work with the applicable KSD2 labor operations under the defect code listed above. The diagnosis and repair of vehicles “arriving” with failed control modules or stored faults which will cause them to fail during programming cannot be claimed under the defect code listed in this bulletin (See “Other Repairs” below). Or: Scenario 6 Labor Operation: 00 00 006 Labor Allowance: Description: Refer to KSD2 Performing “vehicle test” (with vehicle diagnosis system – checking faults) Refer to KSD2 Connect an approved battery charger/power supply (indicated in KSD2 as “Charging battery”) Work time (WT) Performing vehicle diagnosis – test module Refer to KSD2 Continue vehicle test and performing Quick delete And: 61 21 528 And: 61 00 006 And: 61 00 980 If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead. Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Work time labor operation code 61 00 006 is not considered a Main labor operation; however, it does require an individual punch time and an explanation on the repair order and in the claim comments section. https://www.bmwtis.net/tiscode/cgi-bin/bulletin.aspx?sie_path=/tsb/bulletins/htm_store/246... 8/6/2015 Page 4 of 4 Other Repairs If other eligible and covered work: • Is performed “prior” to programming and coding the vehicle, and/or • Results from performing ISTA diagnostics and the related test plans, Claim this work with the applicable defect code and/or labor operations listed in KSD2.
