Technical Service Bulletin 61 Convertible top inoperative 61 13 20 2029956/2 July 2, 2013. Supersedes Technical Service Bulletin Group 61 number 12-16 dated July 6, 2012 for reasons listed below. Model(s) Year VIN Range Vehicle-Specific Equipment A4 Cabriolet 2003 - 2009 All Not Applicable Condition REVISION HISTORY Revision Date Purpose 2 - Revised Warranty (Corrected TUs) 1 7/6/2012 Initial publication Convertible top is inoperative. The following conditions are present: • All switches and sensors check OK. • Convertible top movement ceases. • Convertible top operation has not ceased due to overheat protection. • All operating conditions have been met per MVBs 002, 003, and 004 (e.g. windows are initialized, battery voltage is OK, trunk lid is fully closed and latched, etc.). • Convertible Top Operation Switch E137 is actuated. • The hydraulic pump drive motor may or may not continue to run. Technical Background Loss of convertible top operation may be due to a faulty hydraulic pump drive motor (Figure 1). Figure 1. Hydraulic pump assembly. © 2013 Audi of America, Inc. Technical Service Bulletin Production Solution Improved hydraulic pump drive motor. Service 1. One or more DTCs may be stored in the convertible top operation control module, J256 (address word 26). Perform a Guided Fault Finding (GFF) test plan to address any possible malfunction with the sensors or microswitches by performing the five position test. 2. If all switches and sensors have been diagnosed as having no problem, continue the diagnosis for possible loss of hydraulic pressure: Actuate Convertible Top Operation Switch E137 and listen for the hydraulic pump drive motor. • If the drive motor continues to run, there is no need to test the drive motor itself. • If the drive motor does not continue to run, perform output diagnostic test mode for Convertible Top Hydraulic Pump Relay, J321, and Convertible Top Hydraulic Pump Relay 2, J588: a. Check for suitable voltage and ground at the drive motor during relay activation. b. If voltage and ground are checked and OK and the drive motor does not activate, the pump drive motor is faulty. The entire hydraulic pump assembly does not need to be replaced. Replace only the pump drive motor and the pump lever. Tip: Only replace the hydraulic pump assembly if the root cause of the failure is not merely the drive motor. © 2013 Audi of America, Inc. Page 2 of 4 All rights reserved.
