Rattle or Knock Type Noise from Front of Engine at Idle

This PI is being revised to update the Important statement in the Recommendation/
Instructions section. Please discard PI0202C.
Condition/Concern
Some customers may comment that they hear a rattle or knock type noise coming from the front of the engine at idle
when the vehicle has warmed up. This noise is more prevalent when the A/C is on and could easily be confused for a
compressor noise.
Recommendation/Instructions
Important: DO NOT replace the following components for this condition:
• Air Conditioning Compressor
• Water Pump
• Camshaft Chain or Tensioner
Replace the water pump/balance shaft chain and tensioner (do not replace the water pump) to ensure a successful
repair. Refer to the Water Pump and Balance Shaft Chain Replacement procedure in SI.
