NOTE: This Campaign is retroactive to repairs performed on or after 29-Aug-2014.
NOTE: You must have any necessary parts (especially tappets and barrel/plunger
assemblies) on hand before beginning this field action.
NOTE: Overtime has been authorized to complete this Campaign work. Overtime
premiums are reimbursed at the premium paid to the technician for working overtime.
Overtime is allowed, as needed, for field or in-shop repairs. Please refer to the Warranty
Administration Manual for claims filing instructions for overtime.
Action
In order to qualify for repair under this field action, an engine:
1. will be covered Regardless of coverage status up to 5 years/500,000 miles, and
2. must be on the ESN list.
NOTE: Warning! The tappet guide pins may rotate during the removal of the tappet. The
tappet cannot be correctly installed if the tappet guide pin is out of position. Please
refer to Attachment B for the proper orientation of the tappet guide pin.
NOTE: Actions taken on this Campaign CANNOT be filed to another field action.
NOTE: ESNs completed under this Campaign will be automatically removed from the
TRP 1559 eligibility listing.
After verifying that the engine meets the above requirements, perform the following actions:
1. Remove the fuel pump head and tappets according to Procedure 005-227 in the
appropriate Service Bulletin.
2. Inspect the fuel pump pumping plunger material. If they are confirmed to be steel material
or grey in color then stop any further action on this Campaign, reassemble the engine,
mark the fuel pump head serial number as directed in Step 5, and file for all labor and
replacement gaskets up to this point.
3. If the unit is equipped with ceramic or white in color plungers, inspect the rollers and the
pumping plungers using TSB 140019. If either the rollers or the plungers, or both, do
NOT meet reuse guidelines, stop any further action on this Campaign and follow the
repair instructions found in TRP 1559.
4. If rollers and ceramic plungers meet reuse guidelines, BOTH the tappets (P/N 2872226)
AND the barrel and plunger assemblies (4327258) MUST be replaced. Please refer to
Procedure 005-227 in the appropriate Service Manual for instructions on replacing the
tappets and to the installation instruction number 4908166 for replacement of the barrel
and plunger assemblies.
5. Mark the fuel pump head serial number with white paint, as illustrated in Attachment C, to
signify completion of this field action.
NOTE: Troubleshooting SRTs are NOT claimable under this field action.
