Subject
Fault Code 2198 Caused by Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Keyswitch Wiring
Issue
Normally Fault Code 2198 becomes active on CM2350 engines when there is a
communication problem present between the engine control module (ECM) and variable
geometry turbocharger (VGT) actuator on the J1939 data link. However, certain vehicle
keyswitch wiring configurations can also result in setting Fault Code 2198.
Certain Emergency One keyswitch configurations cause the ECM to power back ON while the
turbocharger actuator is still powering down, when the engine start/stop switch is pressed and
released to stop the engine. The actuator does not correctly process the communication from
the ECM, causing it to log an error code. This condition is not present at the next key ON, and
Fault Code 2198 should be inactive.
To prevent repeat occurrences of Fault Code 2198 and unnecessary replacement of parts,
Emergency One has revised the keyswitch wiring on certain vehicles with specific optional
equipment.
Verification
Pictured below are the previous and revised switches for reference. Also pictured below is the
location of the switch configuration on the dash of Emergency One vehicles.

If a customer experiences Fault Code 2198 on an Emergency One fire apparatus, check the
unit's keyswitch configuration. If the previous configuration is used, this can be the cause of
Fault Code 2198. If the revised configuration is used, the keyswitch configuration is likely not
the cause of Fault Code 2198. Follow the published troubleshooting for Fault Code 2198.
Resolution
Contact a local Emergency One dealer to determine applicability of the wiring update.
Emergency One dealer contact information can be found at www.e-one.com or by calling (352)
237-1122.
