Revised Technical Background (Updated Tip with correct information about XM
channel lineup difference)

Initial publication
One of the following conditions is present:
• The customer says that the vehicle’s reception for SIRIUS radio differs from the reception in his or her other
Audi vehicle.
• The customer says that the vehicle’s reception for SIRIUSXM radio only shows “Linking” when the vehicle is
driven in Puerto Rico.
Technical Background
Starting with the model year 2015 A3 sedan, vehicles with the MIB MMI radio platform (MIB1 and MIB2) use a
different SDARS chipset than what was used with MMI3G/3G+. The new SDARS chipset uses the XM band to
receive SIRIUSXM programming, whereas MMI3G/3G+ used the SIRIUS band to receive SIRIUS programming.
Both bands transmit the same programming, but are independent signals.
• Because the infrastructure supporting the XM band is different than the infrastructure supporting the SIRIUS
band, a performance difference may be perceived. There may be a difference in signal strength compared to
MMI3G/3G+, but the overall reception should remain the same or possibly be improved with XM band.
• Additionally, the SIRIUS band is transmitted over Puerto Rico via satellite, but the XM band satellite signal is
not. Because there are no ground repeaters in Puerto Rico, MIB radios will not receive any satellite radio
stations.

Tip: MIB radios using the XM band have the same music channel line-up. However, the XM band includes
sports channels that are not available on the SIRIUS band (for example, MLB channels 176-189) due to XMspecific licensing agreements in which SIRIUS is not included.
Production Solution
Not applicable. Glove box inserts are being updated to clarify that service in Puerto Rico is limited based on
hardware capability.
