RE:
Stop Sale/Safety Recall: 2003-04 Odyssey SRS Unit Malfunction-UPDATE
Honda bulletin 15-013 Safety Recall: SRS Unit has been updated to clarify and emphasize important details.
There are important inspection steps included in the bulletin to make sure the SRS system is working properly before
installing the new SRS unit. See the bulletin for details.
There is a new and easier method for initializing the OPDS that does not require an HDS. After the new SRS unit is
installed, simply turn the ignition to ON for one full minute, turn the ignition OFF for another minute, and repeat the
process 2 more times. Make sure you wait a minute each time you turn the key. After you’ve cycled the key 3 times, turn
the ignition to ON and if the SRS indictor goes out after 6 seconds, the system is initialized.
To make sure the OPDS initializes properly, there are some important steps that will be added to the bulletin to cover
these points:
The front passenger’s seat position and status:
The seat back must be in the most upright posi on.
The seat base must be slid all the way back.
The seat back pocket must be empty.
Make sure nothing is under the seat.
Make sure the area around the OPDS sensor (front passenger seat back front surface) is dry.
The surface of the seat may be dry, but the interior of the seat may s ll have moisture present that can’t be felt.
Environmental condi ons like rain or snow can directly and indirectly transfer moisture from clothing onto the
front passenger’s seat.
If you’re not sure if the area around the sensor is dry, do this to dry the seat:
Close the windows and sunroof.
Start the engine and run the HVAC at its highest heat setting with the A/C on.
Aim the vents at the OPDS sensor.
If you can’t run the vehicle, use a shop fan aimed at the OPDS sensor.

Try to initialize the OPDS every 30 minutes. If it doesn’t initialize, continue drying the seat and try again in 30
minutes. Most seats will dry within 1.5 hours.
The biggest issue we’re seeing is moisture inside the seat because it’s not something that you can feel or judge by
looking. Most times when we receive complaints about initializing the OPDS, the issues go away after drying the seat. If
you have a vehicle coming in for 15-013, you may want to plan to have extra time available in case you need to dry the
seat.
