Condition
This Update has been proactively released to prevent the following condition from occurring in the vehicle:
On Audi vehicles with electromechanical steering manufactured within a specific period, it is possible that the seal
on the power steering control unit was not manufactured correctly.
This Update is in effect until removed.
Vehicle must meet all of the following criteria:
•
Procedure is valid only for vehicles that show the 48M3 code in the Elsa Campaign/Action Information screen
on the day of repair.
•
Vehicle must be within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
•
Procedure must be performed within the allotted time frame stated in this Technical Service Bulletin.
•
Procedure must be performed on applicable vehicles in dealer inventory prior to sale.
Technical Background
On Audi vehicles with electromechanical steering manufactured within a specific period, it is possible that the seal
on the power steering control unit was not manufactured correctly.

Unplug electrical connector <2> for voltage
supply (terminal 30) at power steering
control unit .

Overview
Power steering control unit with seal (arrow).
1st Check (Visual Inspection)
•
Check that seal is clean.
•
Perform visual check with mirror.
•
If the seal is completely clean, continue to
2 nd check.
•
If the seal is dirty, clean with a dry cloth
and check again.
•
If the seal cannot be completely cleaned, it
must be replaced.
2nd Check (with test liquid)
•
CD
Add test liquid to applicator and wait until
liquid does not drop from the applicator.
NOTE
Liquid must not be allowed to drop off the
applicator into the connector.

Apply test liquid to seal.
•
Wait 5 seconds for the test liquid to take
effect.
•
Wipe off test liquid with a clean lint-free
cloth.
•
Perform visual check with mirror.
•
If the seal is still white no further work is
required.
•
If the seal has taken the color of the test
liquid it must be replaced.

Replacing Seal
•
Heat connector housing for at least 15
seconds to 60 - 70°C using a heat gun.
•
Remove seal while warm using plastic
tweezers. Heat again if necessary.

NOTE
Use the plastic tweezers provided in order to
prevent damage to the connector housing,
especially to the bonding surface.
•

Remove all residue from bonding surface
using cleaning solution.
Dry bonding surface with a lint-free cloth.
NOTE
Wait for at least 30 seconds to allow the
cleaning solution to dry.

Check bonding surface with mirror.

Using tweezers to place the seal in the
recess on the installation connector.
•
Push the installation connector onto the
control unit until it stops.
•
Press the seal on to the connector housing
using your finger.
•
Remove the installation connector.
•
Press seal again with your finger to fully
secure.
•
Perform a visual inspection.
•
If the seal is not centered it must be
replaced again.

After Update has been completed, enter claim as soon as possible to help prevent work from being duplicated
elsewhere. Attach the Elsa screen print showing action open on the day of repair to the repair order.
If customer refused campaign work or vehicle is out of the specified warranty parameter for this Update:
