Condition
A cracking noise is heard from the front end of the vehicle when the driving direction is changed from reverse to
forward.
Technical Background
A slight movement of the stub axle in the wheel bearing causes the noise.
Production Solution
Improved wheel bearings.
Service
1. Road test the vehicle to ensure that the Condition applies and to determine if the noise is coming from one or
both front axles.
2. Remove the affected front axle(s) according to the instructions in Elsa.
3. Clean the axle splines and wheel hub splines to ensure that they are free of debris and grease.
4. Apply two continuous beads of liquid locking
compound (part number D 185400A3) to the axle
splines. One bead of compound should be near the
end of the splines and the other bead should be in
the center of the splines (Figure 1).
Note:
For proper bonding, the vehicle must not be
operated for 8 hours after the repair.
