Reprogramming Procedure
IMPORTANT: Before starting, make sure:

ASIST on the CONSULT PC has been freshly synchronized (updated).

All CONSULT-III plus (C-III plus) software updates (if any) have been installed.
NOTE: The CONSULT PC automatically gets applicable reprogramming data during
ASIST synchronization.

A screen print for Warranty documentation can be done from the CONSULT PC
during this process while still connected to the vehicle.
1. Connect the plus VI to the vehicle.
CAUTION: Make sure the plus VI is securly connected. If the plus VI connection is
loose during reprogramming, the process will be interrupted and the air bag
diagnosis sensor unit may be damaged.
2. Connect the AC Adapter to the CONSULT PC.
CAUTION: Be sure to connect the AC Adapter. If the CONSULT PC battery voltage
drops during reprogramming, the process will be interrupted and the air bag
diagnosis sensor unit may be damaged.
3. Connect the GR-8 battery charger to the vehicle battery:
CAUTION: Be sure the battery charger is connected securely to the battery. Make
sure the battery voltage stays between 12.0V and 15.5V during reprogramming. If
the battery voltage goes out of this range during reprogramming, the air bag
diagnosis sensor unit may be damaged.
4. Turn off all external Bluetooth® devices (e.g., cell phones, printers, etc.) within range of
the CONSULT PC and the plus VI.
CAUTION: Make sure to turn OFF all external Bluetooth® devices. If Bluetooth®
signal waves are within range of the CONSULT PC and the plus VI during
reprogramming, reprogramming may be interrupted and the air bag diagnosis sensor
unit may be damaged.
5. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
6. Turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads such as exterior lights, interior lights, HVAC,
rear defogger, audio, NAVI, seat heater, steering wheel heater, etc.
IMPORTANT: Make sure to turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads. Make sure the battery
voltage stays between 12.0V and 15.5V during reprogramming. If the battery voltage
goes out of this range during reprogramming, the air bag diagnosis sensor unit may be
damaged.

27. Turn the ignition OFF.
28. Disconnect the plus VI from the vehicle.
29. Disconnect the GR-8 battery charger from the vehicle.
30. Disconnect the battery cables, negative battery cable first, and then wait at least three
(3) minutes before going to step 31.
31. Disconnect the air bag diagnosis sensor unit’s center connector, and then remove the
electrical tape.
32. Reconnect the air bag diagnosis sensor unit’s center connector, and then reassemble
the vehicle in reverse order of disassembly.



Titan vehicles: Refer to this bulletin’s SERVICE PROCEDURE and perform vehicle
reassembly (center console) in reverse order of disassembly.
Frontier and Xterra vehicles: Refer to the ESM, section IP-Instrument Panel, for
center console installation.
Make sure the air bag diagnosis sensor unit center connector’s terminals are clean.
33. Reconnect the battery cables, positive battery cable first.
34. Reset/reinitialize systems as needed.

Refer to the ESM, section PG-Power Supply, Ground & Circuit Elements, for a
listing of systems that require reset/initialization after reconnecting the 12 V battery.

Look in the PG section index for ADDITIONAL SERVICE WHEN REMOVING
BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL.

This list often includes items such as radio, power windows, clock, sunroof, etc.
35. Turn the ignition from OFF to ON and observe the air bag warning light:

This light should illuminate for seven (7) seconds, and then go out.
NOTE: If the air bag warning light does not operate as described above, there may
be an issue not covered by this campaign. Refer to ASIST and the ESM for
additional diagnostic and repair information.
