Classification: Reference: EC14-007c Date: NTB15-079c November 30, 2016 2005-2015 FRONTIER; MIL ON WITH DTC P0448 This bulletin has been amended to add steps to apply EPT foam to seal the fuel filler pipe and other minor changes made throughout. Please discard previous versions of this bulletin. APPLIED VEHICLES: 2005-2015 Frontier (D40) APPLIED VIN: 2005-2014 All 2015 vehicles built before 1N6(*)D0(***)FN 752055 Built before April 22, 2015 APPLIED DATE: IF YOU CONFIRM: The MIL is ON with DTC P0448 (EVAP canister vent control valve close) stored in the ECM. ACTION: 1. Replace the EVAP canister (canister) and EVAP canister vent control valve (vent control valve). 2. Remove the canister filter. 3. Attach the EPT foam seal to new fuel filler pipe. 4. Replace the fuel filler pipe, canister drain hose, and fuel filler cap (on some model years). 5. Erase the DTC. IMPORTANT: The purpose of ACTION (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire SERVICE PROCEDURE (starting on page 2) as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair. Nissan Bulletins are intended for use by qualified technicians, not 'do-it-yourselfers'. Qualified technicians are properly trained individuals who have the equipment, tools, safety instruction, and know-how to do a job properly and safely. NOTE: If you believe that a described condition may apply to a particular vehicle, DO NOT assume that it does. See your Nissan dealer to determine if this applies to your vehicle. 1/10 SERVICE PROCEDURE IMPORTANT: Follow all warnings, cautions, and notes in the ESM when working on or near a fuel system and EVAP system components, such as a fuel tank and vent control valve. 1. Remove the following parts from the vehicle: NOTE: The fuel tank must be no more than ¾ full or less to prevent spillage before removing the fuel filler tube. Fuel filler pipe Canister with vent control valve and EVAP control system pressure sensor (pressure sensor) Canister drain hose(s) and filter (if equipped) that connect to the vent control valve If needed, refer to the Electronic Service Manual (ESM), sections EC-Engine Control System and FL-Fuel System (as it applies), for removal procedure. NOTE: o It is recommended to detach the grommet from the fuel filler pipe after detaching the fuel filler pipe from the vehicle. This makes it easier to remove the fuel filler pipe from the vehicle. o Cover the fuel tank’s rubber filler hose with a clean shop rag or suitable covering once the fuel filler pipe has been detached from it. o The new canister drain hose (drain hose) replaces the drain hose(s) and filter (if equipped) that connect to the vent control valve. The existing drain hose(s) and filter are not reinstalled. NOTE: There is no need to remove the bracket or fitting to which the filter and drain hose mount and connect (see Figure 2). Figure 1 and 2 shows long wheel base model. Short wheel base model similar. Remove, do not reuse/reinstall No need to remove Under truck bed inside left rear wheel well area Figure 1 Figure 2 2/10 NTB15-079c Filler pipe drain box 2. Wrap EPT foam (see Parts Information) around the top of the new fuel filler pipe where indicated in Figure 3 as follows: IMPORTANT: The EPT foam must completely seal the filler pipe drain when applied. Read steps 2a–2f before proceeding. Drain hose fitting a. Peel the self-adhesive protective sheet back several inches from the end of the EPT foam strip. This area will be sealed Figure 3 NOTE: The EPT foam is the same on both ends. b. Insert the EPT foam strip so it seals tightly against the drain hose fitting. Wrap the top of the EPT foam strip tightly around the drain hose fitting. Figure 5 3/10 NTB15-079c d. Peel the self-adhesive protective sheet and then wrap the EPT foam 360 degrees around the filler pipe drain box. Wrap the EPT foam so that its width extends above and below the fuel filler pipe drain box that is shown in Figure 3. NOTE: The EPT wrap will fit tightly around the top of the fuel filler pipe and the fuel filler pipe drain box; slack at the bottom will be removed in the next step. Top of fuel filler pipe EPT foam strip sealed against drain hose fitting Figure 6 End the wrap with the EPT foam tightly sealed against the drain hose fitting. Start here. Work evenly around to the opposite side. e. Press the EPT foam adhesive to the fuel filler pipe evenly; pushing the slack around to the opposite side. Figure 7 f. Close the excessive EPT foam by pinching the excess together as shown in Figure 8 and then press the remaining EPT adhesive to the fuel filler pipe. IMPORTANT: The EPT foam must be completely sealed at the top, bottom and to the drain fitting. Confirm that no openings are present. Pinch EPT foam together Figure 8 4/10 NTB15-079c 3. Install the new fuel filler pipe. Before installing: Cover the fuel filler pipe opening (grommet end) with a clean shop rag or other suitable covering. Refer to the ESM, section FL-Fuel System, for installation procedure. Make sure the grommet is positioned as shown in Figure 9. NOTE: It is recommended to install the grommet to the body, and then the fuel filler pipe to the grommet. Notch at 12 o’clock position Grommet Hole at 6 o’clock position Figure 9 5/10 NTB15-079c 4.
