Part or all of the daytime running lights do not work on vehicles equipped with LED daytime running lights.
Tip: For vehicles with halogen daytime running lights, refer to TSB 2017488: 94 Halogen Daytime running
lights do not work.
Technical Background
In the past, the daytime running light bulbs were a serviceable part. In this application, the LED strip cannot be
replaced, and may have an associated control module. This TSB is for servicing information only.
Production Solution
Not applicable.
Service
1. If any DTCs related to daytime running lights are stored in the vehicle electrical system control module, J519
(address word 09), perform the appropriate test plan before proceeding.
Confirm that the condition is not related to low battery voltage during vehicle start. It is possible that the control
modules will reset if the battery voltage at the headlight falls below 9V, which can cause intermittent DRL
operation.

2. If both front daytime running lights are inoperative, verify that they are turned on in the vehicle system option
before proceeding:
• For A3, TT, R8: The daytime running lights are automatically switched on when the headlight switch is set to
AUTO. If the headlight switch is set to OFF, the daytime running lights will be off. This functionality cannot
be changed.
• For A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q7: In vehicles with MMI, the daytime running lights are switched on via the menu
option Exterior light control or Exterior Lighting.
3. • If one or several of the daytime running lights are
inoperative (Figure 1):
Replace the entire affected headlight assembly. The LED
light strip is not a serviceable part.
Tip: Only the headlight assembly needs to be
replaced. Any headlight control modules can be reused.
• If all of the daytime running lights in one headlight
assembly are inoperative: Proceed to step 4.
Figure 1. An inoperative LED light.
4 If all of the daytime running lights in one headlight assembly are inoperative:
• For A3, A5 (2008 - 2012 only), and TT:
Replace the entire headlight assembly, as these vehicles do not have serviceable daytime running light
control modules.
• For all other vehicles:
In order to verify the root cause, swap the daytime running light control modules between the two headlights:
• If the problem is resolved, leave the control modules on the swapped sides and release the vehicle.
Manufacturing differences between components can sometimes be remedied simply by exchanging right
and left control modules.
• If the problem follows the daytime running light control module from the inoperative side, replace the
control module.
• If the problem does not follow the daytime running light control module from the inoperative side, verify all
headlight connections, then replace the entire headlight assembly on the inoperative side.
Tip: For 2009 - 2010 Q5 vehicles, follow TSB 2020780: 94 One or more Daytime Running Light LEDs in
one headlight assembly are inoperative.
