PERFORMING THIS PROCEDURE.
SUBJECT:
Flash: Engine Does Not Start at The First Attempt
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves upgrading the software in the Electronic Steering Lock (ESL) Module.

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles within the following markets/countries:
NAFTA, EMEA and APAC.
NOTE: This bulletin applies to BU vehicles built on or before May 02, 2016 (MDH
0502XX).
NOTE: This bulletin applies to FB vehicles built on or before June 15, 2016 (MDH
0615XX).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience malfunction on first attempt to start the vehicle. Initial
cranking is inhibited but should start/crank on the second attempt. Upon further inspection
the technician may find Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) B1000-01 - Electronic Control Unit
- General Electrical Failure stored in the ESL Module.

DIAGNOSIS:
Using a Scan Tool (wiTECH) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures available in
TechCONNECT, verify all related system are functioning as designed. If DTCs are
present, other than the one stated above, record them on the repair order and repair as
necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin.
If the customer describes the symptom/condition listed above or if the technician finds the
DTC, perform the Repair Procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
NOTE: Install a battery charger to ensure battery voltage does not drop below 13.2
volts. Do not allow the charging voltage to climb above 13.5 volts during the
flash process.
NOTE: If this flash process is interrupted/aborted, the flash should be restarted.
1. Reprogram the ESL with the latest software. Detailed instructions for flashing control
modules using the wiTECH Diagnostic Application are available by selecting the
application’s “HELP” tab.
2. Turn off the ignition, disconnect the wiTECH, open and close the driver’s door and let
all modules go to sleep.
3. Reconnect the wiTECH and clear any DTCs that may have been set in other modules
due to reprogramming.

FAILURE CODE:
The dealer must choose which failure code to use. If the customer came in with an
issue and if the dealer finds a software update to correct that issue, use failure code
CC, for all other use failure code RF.

If the customer’s concern matches the SYMPTOM/CONDITION identified in the
Service Bulletin, failure code CC is to be used.
If an available flash is completed while addressing a different customer concern,
failure code RF is to be used.
