Technical Service Bulletin 96 Alarm sounds when driver door is unlocked with mechanical key 96 14 82 2036344/1 March 4, 2014. Model(s) Year VIN Range Vehicle-Specific Equipment A3 2006 - 2013 All Not Applicable A4/S4, A5/S5, A5/S5 Cabriolet 2010 - 2015 All Not Applicable A6, A7 2012 - 2015 All Not Applicable Q5 2009 - 2015 All Not Applicable R8 2007 - 2015 All Not Applicable TT 2007 - 2015 All Not Applicable Condition • The vehicle’s anti-theft alarm sounds when the driver door is unlocked with a mechanical key. • No DTCs are stored. • The keyless remote was not used to unlock the vehicle. Technical Background In order to minimize current draw after the ignition has been turned off, the electronics system of the vehicle goes into sleep mode. During this time, each module monitors the CAN bus more slowly than when the electronics system is awake. Because the system is being monitored more slowly, there is a delay in the waking of the central locking system. This delay causes a delay in the disabling of the anti-theft alarm system when the manual key is used. If the key is turned in less than a quarter of a second, the system can unlock the vehicle even though the anti-theft alarm has not been disabled. Technical Service Bulletin Service Inform the customer that this delay is a normal function of the vehicle and cannot be changed. Provide the customer with the following suggestions to prevent the anti-theft alarm from activating when the vehicle is being unlocked: • Pause for half of a second when turning the key, or turn the key more slowly. The key must be in the unlock position for between a quarter of a second and half of a second for the central locking system to wake up and disable the anti-theft alarm. • Quickly turn the key to the unlock position twice to allow the system to wake up and disable the anti-theft alarm. Or, try turning the key to the lock position first, then to the unlock position. • Use the keyless remote to unlock the vehicle instead of the manual key.
