A chattering/skipping sensation felt in the front axle during tight, slow-speed turns (such as parking maneuvers)
could occur under the following conditions:
 Tires are cold or ambient temperatures are low.
 Road surface is wet/dirty.
 The vehicle has been parked for an extended period of time.
Technical Background
The R8 has the steering dynamic of a sports car. The inner and outer wheels are turned at approximately the
same steering angle to ensure even power distribution through the front self-locking differential during high speed
cornering. This steering dynamic minimizes understeer and ensures vehicle stability in high-speed turns.
Under normal conditions, when the vehicle is maneuvered through tight turns at slow speeds (such as while
parking), the steering angle difference between the inner and outer wheel is not noticeable because the side wall
flex of the tire is sufficient to compensate. Contact with the road surface is maintained.
However, under certain conditions (such as cold weather, wet/dirty pavement, or a long parking period), a front
tire can scrub. The customer may report a shudder or a skipping sensation felt in the steering/front suspension of
the vehicle during slow-speed parking maneuvers.
This is normal performance for the sports car steering dynamic in the R8, and no repairs are required.
