Introduction
Some 2016 – 2018 model year Tacoma 4WD vehicles may exhibit a cyclical groaning or grinding
noise coming from the front differential in 2WD that is not present during 4WD operation.
Follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin to address this condition.

 This repair is covered under the Toyota Powertrain Warranty. This warranty is in effect for
60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.

Repair Procedure
1. Confirm the condition is present.
Is there a cyclical groaning or grinding noise coming from the front differential in 2WD that is
NOT present during 4WD operation?
 YES — Continue to step 2.

NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable
Repair Manual.

Repair Procedure (continued)
2. Remove the front differential.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

2016 – 2018 Tacoma:
Engine/Hybrid System – Differential – “Differential: Front Differential Carrier Assembly

3. Install the NEW front differential.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:

4. Warm up and test drive the vehicle to confirm the cyclical grinding or groaning noise is
NOT present.
