Introduction
Some 2010 model year Tacoma vehicles equipped with the 2TR-FE engine may exhibit a front
exhaust pipe catalyst rattle noise and/or MIL “ON” condition with DTC P0420 (Catalyst System
Efficiency Below Threshold) stored in the Engine Control Module (ECM) (SAE Term: Powertrain
Control Module/PCM). Refer to the repair procedure to address this condition.

APPLICABLE WARRANTY
• This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emission Warranty. This warranty is in effect
for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.
• Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this
bulletin.

Repair Procedure
1. Test drive and verify that an abnormal rattle noise is heard while accelerating.
2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist with the engine running.

3. Increase the engine speed and listen to the catalytic converter section on the front exhaust pipe
assembly for a rattle noise.
CAUTION
Avoid contacting any part of the exhaust system – it is VERY HOT.

4. Did the noise appear to be the loudest at the catalytic converter section of the front exhaust
pipe assembly?
• YES — Continue to step 5.
• NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable Repair Manual.
5. Replace the front exhaust pipe assembly.
Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model and model year Repair
Manual:

6. Test drive vehicle to confirm repair.
