Confirm that the drivetrain vibration and/or noise condition originates from the rear propeller shaft universal joint(s). A. Do the universal joint grease seals have ANY of the following conditions? Bearing cup seal is broken or separated from the cup Rust-colored dust Grease leakage NOTE Visually inspect each universal joint trunnion and bearing seal. OR is there noticeable universal joint free play or backlash? NOTE Firmly grasp one side of the universal joint and try to turn the other side. There should NOT be free play or backlash. YES — Continue to substep B. NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable Repair Manual. B. Does the propeller shaft yoke have damage or excessive wear caused by the conditions described in substep A? NOTE Visually inspect the yoke for ANY damage caused by a worn universal joint. Inspect the universal joint bearing cup for missing material or the trunnion contacting the yoke flange. YES — Replace the rear propeller shaft assembly. Continue to step 2. NO — Replace ONLY the universal joint(s). Go to step 3. NOTE Replacement of the propeller shaft will be necessary in rare occasions.
