This condition can occur when the spare tire carrier is operated without the wheel attached. Follow the Repair Procedure in this bulletin to address this condition. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date. Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this bulletin. Position of Cable AFTER Spare Tire Carrier Is Stuck 1. Turn the jack handle clockwise to wind up the carrier, 1 or more full turns (a clicking noise may be heard). Unwind the carrier counter-clockwise while putting tension on the cable (pull cable with hand or place tire on cable). The hook may be stuck to the lip of the carrier’s housing once the cable is free and unwound as shown in Figure 5. To remove the hook from the lip, slightly lift the hook and adjust it until it is free. Figure 4. Close-up of the Hook NOTE If the spare tire carrier is unable to be corrected by the Repair Procedure, then replace with NEW part. Figure 5. Remove the spare tire from the lift plate if mounted to carrier. NOTE If there is insufficient clearance to remove the spare tire, it may be necessary to cut the spare tire carrier cable. 2. Remove the deck board assembly. 3. Remove the No. 3 deck board sub-assembly 4. Fold the rear No. 2 seatback assembly LH forward. 5. Disengage the 4 claws, clip and guide to remove the deck side trim box LH. Figure 6. Fold the rear No. 2 seatback assembly RH forward. 7. Using a clip remover, remove the 7 clips. Figure 7. Location of Clips 8. Remove the nut. 9. Disengage the 4 claws, 2 clips and 2 guides to remove the rear deck floor box. Figure 8. 1 Nut Claw Guide Clip 10. Remove the 6 nuts retaining the spare tire carrier assembly. © 2016 Toyota Motor Sales, USA Page 7 of 8 T-SB-0149-16 October 20, 2016 Page 8 of 8 Spare Tire Carrier Does Not Fully Unwind Removal Procedure (Continued) 11. Remove the spare tire carrier assembly by lifting upward. While raising the spare tire carrier assembly, the lift plate MUST be guided through the opening in the body. Figure 9. NOTE If there is insufficient clearance to guide the lift plate through the opening in the body, it may be necessary to cut the spare tire carrier cable. 12. Install the NEW spare tire carrier assembly by guiding the lift plate through the opening in the body and tighten the 6 mounting nuts. NOTE MAX speed during installation should be 400RPM. MAX winding Torque: 14 N*m (10.3 ft*lbf) with max tire weight. 13. Reassemble spare tire carrier by reversing removal steps. 14.
