Complaint - Hydraulic Pump Leaking in Shaft Sealing Ring Area: Checking the cause
(16/18)
Model Line:
Cayenne (92A)
Model Year:
As of 2011 up to 2018
Subject:
Hydraulic pump, tandem pump
Information:
Analysis has shown that traces of oil found in the hydraulic pump or tandem pump area are not
always caused by a Pentosin leak in the pump.
In the event of a complaint about traces of oil in the hydraulic pump or tandem pump area,
proceed as follows before doing any other work:
1
Check the Pentosin fluid level in the power-steering system reservoir and fill to maximum level
if necessary.
•
•
Pentosin fluid level corresponds to the required value and
the customer did not add any Pentosin ( confirm this with the customer)
 No further action is required that would result in the hydraulic pump/tandem pump
having to be replaced.
2
Clean the area contaminated with oil using clean cloths and isopropanol.
3
Spray the affected area with suitable leak-locating agent/leak-locating spray (commercially
available).
Cover adjacent areas around the belt tensioner with a cloth.
Only spray the hydraulic pump/tandem pump with leak-locating spray.
Never spray leak-locating spray on the drive belt or deflection and tensioning rollers.
While cleaning, check for oil contamination on other components near the drive belt.
Oil leaking from another component, for example, can be spread/transferred to the belt tensioner
via the drive belt.
4
Perform a test drive.
5
After the test drive, the hydraulic pump/tandem pump area must be checked for Pentosin leaks and
any traces of oil that are found must be investigated.
Drops of oil/Pentosin or oil/Pentosin sweating after the test drive:
•
•
Pentosin is clearly visible,
the Pentosin is definitely coming from the hydraulic pump/tandem pump.

 In this case, the hydraulic pump/tandem pump must be replaced.
End of action required.
•
Tip for analysing noises:
In the event of a complaint about noise, if the hydraulic pump/tandem pump is found to be the
component responsible for causing the noise, see the information below:
 To help you to analyse the noise better, create a sound file of the noise and send it as an attachment
with the PQIS job.
Invoicing:
For invoicing and documentation using PQIS, enter the following coding:
Location (FES5)
48980
Hydraulic pump for steering
Damage type (SA4)
5041
Oil/grease leak
