20-45 New Surge Tank Cap FLA COE FLB COE FLD Conventional Business Class > FLC 112 Conventional > Century Class Conventional > Argosy COE Cargo > Columbia Condor > Coronado Business Class M2 Freightliner Service Bulletin General Information The current surge tank cap (PN 05-20763-000) has a negative pressure rating of 1.5 psi (10.3 kPa), which is too high and may cause the upper radiator hose to collapse on vehicles with a DDC Series 60 engine. Engineering and the supplier have designed a new surge tank cap (PN 05-20763-001) that has a negative pressure rating of 0.5 psi (3.4 kPa). This new rating will prevent the upper radiator hose from collapsing. If the upper radiator hose collapses, it could contact the engine pulleys and belts. This contact may rub a hole in the hose and result in coolant leakage or possible engine overheating. To replace the surge tank cap, use the following procedure. Surge Tank Cap and Upper Radiator Hose Inspection and Replacement 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface. Set the parking brakes, shut down the engine, and chock the tires. 2. Open the hood or raise the cab. For Argosy cab tilting instructions, see Group 60 of the Century Class Trucks Workshop Manual. WARNING Do not remove or loosen the radiator cap until the engine and cooling system have completely cooled. Use extreme care when removing the cap. A sudden release of pressure when removing the cap prior to the system cooling can result in a surge of scalding coolant that could cause serious personal injury. 3. Remove the surge tank cap. 4. Check the surge tank cap part number. If the part number is 05-20763-000, replace it with 05-20763-001. If the part number is 05-20763-001, replacement is not required. 5. Install the surge tank cap. 6. Inspect the underside of the upper radiator hose for evidence that it has been rubbing on the pulleys or belts. If the there is only minor scuffing, it is not necessary to replace the hose. Go to step 12. If extensive wear is evident, replace the hose. Go to the next step. 7. Using a suitable container, partially drain the cooling system to below the level of the upper radiator hose. 8. Loosen the hose clamps and remove the hose. 9. Install the new hose and tighten the hose clamps 55 lbf·in (620 N·cm). 10. Fill the cooling system to the proper level. 11. Start the engine and check for leaks. 12. Return the hood or cab to the operating position. For Argosy cab tilting instructions, see Group 60 of the Century Class Trucks Workshop Manual. 13. Remove the chocks from the tires. Parts Parts are available through the PDCs.
