Title
Mack Chassis - Diagnostic Trouble Code ( DTC ) P2459 Lighting The Malfunction
Indicator Lamp ( MIL ); Possible Frequent Regeneration Requests - US14+OBD15 And
US14+OBD16 Emissions, Common Model Years 2016 And 2017
Cause
2016 and 2017 model year vehicles may log DTC P2459 - Diesel Particulate Filter
Regeneration Frequency (Bank 1). P2459 may log with or without frequent regeneration
requests. The diagnostic process that this DTC sets for is the monitor of how often
regenerations are requested by the Engine Control Module ( EMS ), and is intended to
determine when the Diesel Particulate Filter ( DPF ) needs to be serviced or indicate a
problem causing rapid soot accumulation. Chassis experiencing repeat occurrences of
P2459 are most commonly units operating in applications that involve any of the below:
- Frequent stop-and-go operation (food service deliveries, for example)
- Local operation with little to no drive time at stable highway speeds or short overall
distance traveled at one time
• Passive regeneration only occurs when exhaust temperatures are able to reach the
correct level and are sustained at that level while the chassis is in motion. These
conditions are normally only seen during highway operation.
- Operation requiring an extended amount of idling or operation at low speeds (Paving
and construction; mining)
Solution
Verify the chassis emissions level
- Details can be found in the Product Details box on the Product tab in PTT as seen below:
Review the Detailed Status Information for the relevant code on the DTC Readout.
Software improvements have been released for both emissions levels to address
this DTC. Field Service Bulletins with information and instructions have been
published for each emissions level. Both FSBs can be found under the Service tab
in Impact, Function Group 284. The articles can also be searched for by Title.
Refer to the chart below for the correct bulletin information:

If the Bulletin does not appear when searched with either VIN or Chassis
information entered, search by model:
1. Clear any chassis information from the Search box.
2. Select or enter the applicable model.
3. Make sure Title is selected in the Search By field. Enter the correct Bulletin title in the
text entry field.
4. Press the Search button. The operation will appear in the results window.
5. Select the correct vehicle configuration from the list that appears as shown below:
If software is current and the code is present, the code confirmed status should be
verified to be TRUE as shown above before continuing diagnosis.
Codes and symptoms that may be related to P2459 should be diagnosed prior to
P2459 itself.
