recommended technical diagnosis and repair procedures. Apply this procedure to all vehicles in the affected VIN range
listed. These instructions assume knowledge of motor vehicle and high voltage electrical component repairs, and should
only be executed by trained professionals. Tesla assumes no liability for injury or property damage due to a failure to

This Service Document supersedes SB-18-40-004, dated 23-Feb-18. Each content change is marked by a vertical line in

On certain Model 3 vehicles, an issue in the CAN transceiver internal to the drive unit might result in intermittent
communication errors, causing the vehicle to go into limp mode or not start.

1. Create a Toolbox session if there isn’t already an open session related to this repair.
2. Escalate the Toolbox session to Zone.
3. Replace the rear drive unit (refer to Service Manual procedure 40011002).
