Some 2005 – 2011 model year Tacoma vehicles may exhibit a condition where there is a drivetrain
vibration and/or drivetrain noise. Follow the procedure in this bulletin to address this condition.

 This repair is covered under the Toyota Powertrain Warranty. This warranty is in effect for
60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.
 Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in
this bulletin.

Repair Procedure
1. Confirm that the drivetrain vibration and/or noise condition originates from the rear propeller
shaft universal joint(s).
A. Do the universal joint grease seals have ANY of the following conditions?
 Bearing cup seal is broken or separated from the cup
 Rust-colored dust
 Grease leakage
NOTE
Visually inspect each universal joint trunnion and bearing seal.
OR is there noticeable universal joint free play, backlash, or binding?
NOTE
 Inspect joint binding AFTER detaching the propeller shaft assembly from the vehicle.
 Firmly grasp one side of the universal joint and try to turn the other side. There should NOT be
free play, backlash, or binding.
 YES — Continue to substep B.
 NO — This bulletin does NOT apply. Continue diagnosis using the applicable
Repair Manual.
B. Does the propeller shaft yoke have damage or excessive wear caused by the conditions
described in substep A?
NOTE
Visually inspect the yoke for ANY damage caused by a worn universal joint. Inspect the universal
joint bearing cup for missing material or the trunnion contacting the yoke flange.
 YES — Continue to step 2 to replace the rear propeller shaft assembly.
 NO — Go to step 3 to replace ONLY the universal joint(s).
NOTE
 Replacement of the propeller shaft is necessary in rare occasions.
 Replacement of the universal joint(s) resolves concerns related to noise and/or vibration.
