“Clicking” or “Ticking” Sound from VDC
Hydraulic Control Unit
INTRODUCTION:
This bulletin announces a new Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) Module and Hydraulic Control
Unit (VDCCM&HCU). The new part was designed to address a small number of customer concerns
regarding a clicking or ticking-type sound heard coming from the driver’s side footrest area. The new
modules incorporate logic with enhanced internal solenoid and motor control characteristics.
PRODUCTION CHANGE INFORMATION:
The new control unit was incorporated into production on WRX and WRX STI starting with VIN
H9840542. This bulletin will be revised with the Impreza starting VINs when they become available.

SERVICE PROCEDURE / INFORMATION:

Step 1: Always confirm the customer’s concern.

Scenario 1: After confirming the customer’s concern, open the hood and verify the sound is
actually coming from the VDCCM&HCU and not another component.

Step 2: Connect the SM4 and access data monitoring for the Brake Control system. Select the data
for Motor Relay Signal and Motor Relay Monitor Voltage (V) as shown in the image below.

Scenario 2: Inspect the value for Motor Relay Monitor Voltage. If any “spikes” of voltage
exceeding 0.2v are identified while the Motor Relay Signal shows either ON or OFF, the
VDCCM&HCU must be replaced.
Step 3: If either Scenario 1 or 2 described above is confirmed, the VDCCM&HCU must be
replaced.
The service procedure for replacing the VDCCM/HCU remains unchanged. Always refer to the
applicable Service Manual and review the full requirements of the repair being performed. The
Service Manual procedures contain information critical to performing an effective repair the first
time and every time. This includes but is not limited to: important SAFETY precautions, proper
inspection criteria, necessary special tools, required processes and related one-time-use parts needed
for a complete and lasting repair.

For vehicles within the Basic New Car Limited Warranty period or covered by an active Subaru
Added Security Classic or Gold plan, this repair may be submitted using the following claim
