SUBJECT
One or Both Trunk Lid Tail Lamps Malfunction
MODEL
F30 (3 Series)
F31 (3 Series Sports Wagon)
Produced from May 31, 2013 to October 30, 2013
SITUATION
One of the tail lamps is out in the trunk lid light cluster. This is accompanied by one of the following CCM (Check
Control Messages):
z
Tail lamp in tailgate malfunction
z
Rear fog light malfunction
z
Reversing light malfunction
ISTA shows one or more fault(s) present:
z
80486A - Short-circuit in left-hand reversing light
80486B - Short-circuit in right-hand reversing light
80487F - Rear fog light, left, faulty
804880 - Rear fog light, right, faulty
CAUSE
The socket housing in the rear lamp mounted on the trunk lid is defective.
PROCEDURE
Perform diagnosis using ISTA and diagnose any faults related to the above situation. Follow the test plan
recommendations. If one or more of the above faults are stored in the REM (Rear electronic module), replace the
bulb socket housing in the trunk lid on the faulty side.
Follow ISTA REP 63 21 035, “Removing and replacing left or right socket housing for rear light (on tailgate)” or
the attached repair instruction.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair,
use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead.
Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of
the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the “Search” button, and then enter the
applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.
Work time (WT) labor operation 61 00 006 requires an individual punch time.

If performing ISTA diagnostics and related test plans results in other eligible and covered work, claim this work
with the applicable defect code and/or labor operations listed in KSD2.
