TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS

HVAC BLOWER MOTOR
CERTAIN 2016-2017 MODEL TACOMA
The repair quality of covered vehicles is extremely important to Toyota. All dealership technicians
performing this repair are required to successfully complete the most current version of the E-Learning
course “Safety Recall and Service Campaign Essentials”. To ensure that all vehicles have the repair
performed correctly; technicians performing this SSC repair are required to currently hold at least one of the
following certification levels:

Master Diagnostic Technicians
It is the dealership’s responsibility to select technicians with the above certification level or greater to
perform this SSC repair. Carefully review your resources, the technician skill level, and ability before
assigning technicians to this repair. It is important to consider technician days off and vacation
schedules to ensure there are properly trained technicians available to perform this repair at all times.

II. IDENTIFICATION OF AFFECTED VEHICLES

Check the TIS Vehicle Inquiry System to confirm the VIN is involved in this Special Service
Campaign, and that it has not already been completed prior to dealer shipment or by another
dealer.
TMS warranty will not reimburse dealers for repairs completed on vehicles that are not
affected or were completed by another dealer.

IV. BACKGROUND
There is a possibility that the blower motor fan hub in the involved vehicles was produced with incorrect
dimensions. A blower motor fan hub with incorrect dimensions may develop a crack over time. If a vehicle is
continuously operated with this condition, the damage may worsen, leading to an abnormal noise and eventually an
inoperable blower motor fan.

VI. REPLACE THE BLOWER WITH FAN MOTOR SUB-ASSEMBLY
Always wear protective gloves and use caution in order to
prevent injury.
1.
REMOVE THE BLOWER WITH FAN MOTOR SUB-ASSEMBLY
a) Disconnect the connector and clamp(s).
b) Remove the 3 bolts to remove the heater blower cover and the blower
with fan motor sub-assembly.
To prevent damage such as bolt threads, hold the motor
securely and loosen the bolts.
c) Remove the heater blower cover from the blower with fan motor subassembly.

INSTALL THE NEW BLOWER WITH FAN MOTOR SUB-ASSEMBLY
a) Reinstall the heater blower cover on to the NEW blower with fan motor
sub-assembly.
b) Install the blower with fan motor sub-assembly and the heater
blower cover with 3 bolts are temporarily tightened until it
comes into contact with the heater blower cover.
To prevent damage such as bolt threads, hold the motor
securely and tighten the bolts.
c) Using the 5.5 mm socket wrench and your hands, tighten 3 bolts
evenly until snug. Make sure the torque between the bolts is even.
Since the required torque is small, using ratchet wrench for
forcibly tightening could result in damage on the cooling
unit case.
d) Connect the connector and clamp.

As required by Federal Regulations, please make sure all recalled parts (original parts)
removed from the vehicle are disposed of in a manner in which they will not be reused,
unless requested for parts recovery return.
