SUBJECT
Service Action: Retrofit Bracket for EGR Cooler
MODEL
E70 (xDrive35d)
SITUATION
The flexible pipe on the high-pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler may leak.
CAUSE
Excessive vibration and/or tension at the flexible elbow of the EGR cooler can cause it to leak.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
This Service Action involves certain E70 vehicles with the M57Y engine which were produced
from
3/2008 to
9/2012.
In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action completed or is
affected by this Service Action, first check the B-pillar label for code number 651. If code number
651 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 651 has not
been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer
Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed
with the corrective action or take no further action.
PROCEDURE
Remove the throttle valve per Repair Instruction 111 71 025.
Install bracket P/N 13 54 8 576 446 (1)
to the cylinder head using the bolt P/N
07 11 9 904 527 (2). Leave this bolt
finger tight until after the throttle valve
is reinstalled.
Note: If the EGR
cooler is leaking at the flexible elbow,
replacement is necessary.

Reinstall the throttle valve and snug
down all three throttle valve screws.
Torque the two screws that are not
attached to the new bracket to
specification (8Nm). Tighten down the
bracket bolt on the cylinder head (1) to
8Nm. Tighten the screw (2) holding
the bracket to the throttle to 8 Nm.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number
651. After the vehicle has been checked and/or
corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-420) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in
the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 651 (2), printed on the
label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one.
Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could
appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
