INFORMATION
Starting on October 10th, 2013, BMW will be collecting defective E46 SULEV fuel tanks (P/N 16 11 6
763 569) for a special analysis project.
To remove and prepare the fuel tank for shipping, please follow the procedure described below. Your
dealer will receive a package addressed to your Shop Foreman, containing the plugs and caps
needed to secure the fuel tank. If additional plug kits are needed, please contact Michael Murray via
email at [email protected]. Please provide a shipping address, contact name and
telephone number.
1. Before removing the fuel tank from the vehicle, extract as much fuel as possible, using the
procedure described in Repair Instruction 16 11 005, “Draining and filling fuel tank.”
2. Remove the fuel tank per Repair Instruction 16 11 030, “Removing and installing fuel tank (M56
Automatic).”
3. Do not drill any holes into the fuel tank to drain the fuel. After the fuel tank has been removed from
the vehicle and is placed on the ground, slightly tilt the fuel tank so that all of the fuel moves to the
portion of the tank closest to the filler neck. Extract the remaining fuel as described in Repair
Instruction 16 11 005, “Draining and filling fuel tank.” It is important to extract as much fuel as
possible.
Your Shop Foreman recently received a package containing various plugs, caps and bags for
securing the fuel tank.
4. Reinstall the existing fuel filler cap and reconnect the fuel vent hose to the filler neck connection.

5. Insert the red rubber plug to close the fuel
line.
6. Use duct tape to secure the plug to the fuel
line.

7. Install the supplied plastic bag over the end;
use a single-wire tie to secure the bag.
8. Apply Teflon tape to the supplied plug.
9. Install the plug and torque to 15 Nm.
10. Reuse the corrugated box that the new tank was packed in. Once the used tank has been secured
and packed for shipping, call AIT Worldwide Logistics to arrange the shipping. AIT will require the
dealer name, contact person, contact phone number, pickup address and estimated time of day
when the package can be picked up.*

11. Create a PuMA Info Only case with the following in the subject line: ‟E46 SULEV Fuel Tank
Replacement.” Provide a brief description of the customer complaint in the case. Print the case
and place a copy of the case in the box with the defective fuel tank.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
When an E46 SULEV fuel tank is replaced under an applicable BMW warranty, claim the additional
labor operation listed below to perform the tank processing procedure.
