SERVICE ACTION: CHECK CHARGING OF THE HIGH
VOLTAGE BATTERY
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles prior to
customer delivery, or the next time the vehicle is in the shop.
MODEL
F15 PHEV (X5)
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves F15 PHEV (X5) vehicles produced from September 23rd, 2015 to
September 30th, 2016.
Approximately 82 vehicles are affected by this Service Action. Vehicles which require this action to
be completed will show as “Open” when checked either in AIR or ISPI Next. Once the Warranty
Vehicle Inquiry system is updated, it will display the same information. The affected vehicles will be
identified with the comment: Technical Campaign B61 28 16 High-Voltage Battery.
SITUATION
High-voltage charging system may not work correctly.
CAUSE
Intermittent hardware failure of the charging module (KLE).
CORRECTION
Check the HV charging process according to the procedure below.
PROCEDURE

2. Repeat this step 20 times. Was “Charging
Active” indicated in every (all 20) charging
cycle attempt?
YES - there are no further actions needed. The
KLE charging module is working correctly.
NO – Continue to next step.
3. If the charging port indicator light flashes red
(“Charging error”), connect vehicle to ISTA
diagnostics and read vehicle’s fault memory.
Is KLE fault code 21E64A (Charging
electronics, internal fault step down converter
voltage sensor measured value outside setpoint) stored?
YES - Go to next step.
4. The KLE charging electronics module needs to
be replaced. Follow the ISTA RA61 44 502 repair
instruction (Removing and installing/replacing the
KLE)
5. After KLE replacement, vehicle needs to be programmed/coded using the latest version of
ISTA Next.
Note that ISTA Next will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control
modules that do not have the latest software.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).
For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to: CenterNet / TIS /
Technical Documentation / Diagnostics and Programming / Programming
