Automatic Trunk Does Not Open Fully
MODEL
F10 (5 Series Sedan) with option code (SA316)
Produced October 9, 2014 to April 1, 2016
SITUATION
Automatic trunk does not open fully on first attempt when using any opening options.
During the first unlock attempt,
whether using:
z
the inside trunk switch,
z
remote key,
z
Smart opener (foot swipe),
the automatic trunk lid only opens part
way as shown.
CAUSE
HKL software and trunk latch adjustment issue.
CORRECTION
Adjust trunk lid then reprogram and code vehicle.
Note: Replacement of any components for automatic trunk opening will not help.
PROCEDURE
In the event of a customer concern, the repair procedure is as follows:
1. Use Repair Instruction 51 24 004 and check or adjust the trunk lid.
2. Perform diagnosis with ISTA/D and troubleshoot any related faults.
3. Program the vehicle using ISTA/P 3.58.1 or higher (integration level F010-16-03-502 or
higher).
4. Activate trunk opening to make sure it operates properly.

Note that ISTA/P will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do
not have the latest software. For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to
CenterNet / TIS / Technical Documentation / Programming and Diagnostics / Programming
Documentation.
Always connect a BMW approved battery charger / power supply(SI B04 23 10).

Vehicle Programming and Encoding
If a control module was working properly and it fails to program correctly or requires initialization,
please claim this additional work with the applicable KSD2 labor operations under the defect code
listed above.
The diagnosis and repair of vehicles “arriving” with failed control modules or stored faults which
will cause them to fail during programming cannot be claimed under the defect code listed in this
bulletin.
Other Repairs
If other eligible and covered work is performed “prior” to programming and coding the vehicle,
claim this work with the applicable defect code and labor operations listed in KSD2.
