Please discard PIT4013A. The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI Condition / Concern The 13,500 lb GVW rear axle RPO GL8 available on C45/55 Models is manufactured with the ring gear riveted to the differential case. If it becomes necessary to separate the ring gear from the differential case, the rivets will need to be removed and replaced with a bolt kit from GM Service Parts using the following procedure. Recommendations / Instructions When it is necessary to remove a riveted ring gear from the differential case, carefully center punch each rivet head. Then use a 9/16" drill bit to drill through the rivet to a depth just below the rivet head. Next, use a rounded type punch to drive out the remaining portion of the rivet. NOTE: Do not use chisels, grinders, impact tools or torch to remove rivets to prevent damage to the differential case. Reinstall the ring gear to the differential case using GM Service Part Bolt Kit P/N 88935890. Torque the new bolts and nuts to 220 lb ft (298 NM). Refer to SI Document ID #807041 for installation of ring gear attaching bolts. Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. © 2018 General Motors. All Rights Reserved.
