Vehicles produced from June 1, 2017 to September 14, 2018
SITUATION
Loud, rushing, wind noise is heard from ventilation outlets, as shown in video, https://tinyurl.com/V640418 when
defroster blower is set at maximum speed.
CAUSE
• Software error in IHKA (Automatic Climate Control) module.
• Ventilation duct noise
CORRECTION
Reprogram vehicle.
Note: Reprogramming vehicle will not eliminate ventilation noises created by situations other than
blower at maximum defrost.
Noise complaints in all blower speeds except maximum defrost can be corrected by installing improved
ventilation ducts.

For conditions that are similar to the situation described:
1. Perform diagnosis with the latest version of ISTA, working through test module, if needed.
2. Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.11.3x or higher.

Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the
latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

Diagnostics and Programming / Programming Documentation.
3. Does the customer have noise complains other than maximum defrost?
NO: You are finished with the repair
YES: Proceed to the next step
4. Replace the left and right footwell ventilation ducts per the instructions below:
Remove the footwell trim panel on the right:

Unclip the trim panel (1) inwardly in area (2)

Turn the locks (3) by 90°

Unhook right footwell trim panel (1) inwards from the guides
(4)

Unlock associated plug connections and disconnect

Replace the right hand side footwell ventilation duct

Reinstall the right trim panel
Remove the footwell trim panel on the left:


Turn the locking mechanism (1) 90° and release
Detach the trim panel for the pedal mechanism (2) inwards
out of the guides (3)

Unlock associated plug connections and disconnect

Remove the trim panel for the pedal assembly (2)

Replace the left hand side footwell ventilation duct

Reinstall the left trim panel

If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead of 00
00 006.
Refer to KSD2/AIR for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
Work time labor operation code 61 00 006 is not considered a Main labor operation; however, it does require an
individual punch time and an explanation on the repair order and in the claim comments section.
During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also
includes programming and encoding the control units, the programming procedure may only be invoiced one
time.

A. The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do
not have the latest software I-level. If one or more control module failures occur “during” this programming
procedure:
• Please claim this “consequential” control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this
bulletin with the applicable KSD2/AIR labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments
section.
B. For control module failures that occurred “prior” to performing this programming procedure; and/or
C. Other work/repairs that results from performing ISTA diagnostics and the related test plans:
• When “covered” under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work
using the applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in KSD2/AIR.
