Customers may regard these brake noises as an acoustic defect. Remedial Action: Retrofit connecting plates on the rear brake calipers. Affected Vehicles: Only the vehicles assigned to the campaign (see also PIWIS Vehicle information). This campaign affects 1,866 vehicles in North America. (or locally available equivalent) 9472 - Brake piston resetting fixture AfterSales Dec 21, 2018 Page 1 of 4 4 Service WJ85 ENU Technical Information 157/18 Retrofitting connecting plates on the rear brake calipers Work Procedure: 1 Raise the vehicle on a lifting platform Workshop Manual '4X00IN Lifting the vehicle'. 2 Remove rear wheels Workshop Manual '440519 Removing and reinstalling wheel'. 3 Remove rear disc brake pads. For instructions, see Workshop Manual '463856 Replacing rear disc brake pads'. 4 Reset brake pistons using 9472 - brake piston reset tool. 5 Retrofit connecting plates on both brake calipers. 5.1 Coat O-rings Connecting plates on brake caliper -2- on the connecting plate Connecting plates on brake caliper -1- with some water to make it easier to press it into the brake caliper. 5.2 Press connecting plates Connecting plates on brake caliper -1- fully as far as they will go into both brake pistons Connecting plates on brake caliper -3- ( Connecting plates on brake caliper -arrow A-). When doing this, only exert pressure on the center of the connecting plate Connecting plates on brake caliper -arrow a-. 5.3 Pull protective paper off the connecting plate Connecting plates on brake caliper -1-. If necessary, clean the area on the mounting plates Mounting plate of disc brake pad -1- that comes into contact with the connecting plate with brake cleaner. 6 Install the rear disc brake pads you removed earlier. For instructions, see Workshop Manual '463856 Replacing rear disc brake pads'. 7 Fit disc brake pads on the brake discs by pressing the brake pedal several times until the pressure point of the brake pedal has returned to normal. Mounting plate of disc brake pad 8 Carry out a visual inspection of the brake fluid level and correct the brake fluid level if necessary. The brake fluid level must be between the MIN and MAX markings. For instructions, see Workshop Manual 470855 Replacing brake fluid. 9 Install rear wheels Workshop Manual '440519 Removing and reinstalling wheel'. 10 Remove the vehicle from the lifting platform. 11 Enter the campaign in the Warranty and Maintenance booklet.
