WJ23 - Retrofitting Magnesium Wheels on the Vehicle (Workshop Campaign)
Revision:
December 14, 2018
This revision amends the WJ23 as follows:
The maximum allowable cost for the 4 tires has been updated.
Model Year:
2018
Model Line:
911 GT2 RS (991)
Equipment:
Racetrack package (I-no. 808)
Subject:
Magnesium wheels
Information:
The demand for the equipment option "Weissach package" was significantly higher than
originally calculated. This resulted in supply bottlenecks, for example, for the supplier of the
magnesium wheels contained in this package.
As a result, vehicles were delivered provisionally with aluminum wheels and do not therefore match the
customer order.
Remedial
Action:
Retrofit magnesium wheels on the vehicle according to the campaign scope assigned to the
respective vehicle.
Information
To find out which campaign scope is assigned to the respective vehicle for retrofitting the magnesium
wheels, see PIWIS Vehicle Information.
•
Scope 1: Magnesium wheels painted in black matt (I-no. XDK)
•
Scope 2: Magnesium wheels painted in platinum satin-matt (I-no. XDH)
•
Scope 3: Magnesium wheels painted in white gold metallic (I-no. 340)
The part numbers of the parts required for the respective vehicle are given in the assigned
campaign scope.
For an overview of the campaign scopes, see:  Technical Information 'Warranty processing'

Information
The set of wheels already fitted on the vehicle, consisting of aluminum wheels and tires, must be given to
the customer free of charge. This can be used as a second set of wheels.
If the customer does not accept the aluminum set of wheels, they must not be used on any other vehicle.
The aluminum set of wheels must then be scrapped and disposed of correctly.
Affected
Vehicles:
Only the vehicles assigned to the campaign (see also PIWIS Vehicle information). This campaign affects
133 vehicles in North America.

Information
•
For correct tire mounting, always follow the instructions provided for the tire removal/mounting
machine.
•
The temperature of the tires must be approx. 68° F/20° C (at least 59° F/15° C) during fitting. Allow
enough time to heat the tires in a suitable environment (at a room temperature of more than 59°
F/15° C) if necessary.
•
Make sure that there is no significant localized pressure on the magnesium wheel and on the tire
during fitting. If excessive pressure is applied, this can cause damage that will render a tire unusable
and/or a new magnesium wheel will be required.
•
Before fitting, check the mounting head (of the mounting machine) for damage (scoring, soiling). The
mounting head may have to be cleaned or replaced. A dirty or damaged mounting head can cause
paint damage and pressure points on the rim flange.
•
All parts that come into contact with the magnesium wheel and the tire are made of plastic to
prevent damage to paintwork during fitting. The rim flange and mounting lever must be masked with
adhesive tape to prevent damage to the area around the wheel spokes.
•
If you do not have a mounting lever with plastic protection, use a rim flange protector (assembly aid)
to prevent it from slipping onto the rim flange.
•
When fitting the tires, always check the rolling direction and the inside/outside of the tires and make
sure not to press the tire bead against the wheel electronics.
•
Do not apply tire mounting paste on the wheel electronics.
Work Procedure: 1
Install the wheel electronics unit on all magnesium wheels. For instructions, see  Workshop Manual
'443219 Removing and installing wheel electronics'.
2
Fit tires on the magnesium wheels. For instructions, see  Workshop Manual '443219 Mounting
tyres (removing and installing tyres)'.
3
Balance the magnesium wheels  Workshop Manual '440594 Balancing/optimising wheels'.
4

The wheel change must be communicated to the TPM system. To do this, select the tire type
and tire size under Main menu - TPM - Tire type in the instrument cluster.
The TPM system re-learns the wheel positions during the test drive from a speed of 16 mph (25
km/h).
