New information provided by this revision is preceded by this symbol

This Service Information bulletin replaces SI B12 03 18 dated January 2018
What’s New:
• Additional affected Integration levels added to Situation 2
• New target I-Level needed to correct Situation 2
• Formatting was changed to include Target I-Level tables
MODEL

SITUATION
Two possible situations may be encountered:
Situation 1. The “reduced engine power” warning lamp illuminates, together with the Check Control message:
"Drive faulty!". The engine runs with reduced power output.


Fault code (FC) 1F0541 is stored in the DME control unit: Drive, safety function: Bus signal about engine
torque implausible
FC CF2C11 is stored in the EGS control unit: - DME/DDE interface: (Actual DME/EGS crankshaft torque,
0xA5, actual crankshaft torque, 0xA5) signal invalid
Situation 1 only occurs on the following Integration levels (I-level):

F020-16-07-5xx

F020-16-11-500

F020-16-11-501

Situation 2. No difference can be heard in the overall exhaust sound when in “SPORT“ or “SPORT+“ driving
modes compared to the “Comfort” mode on the Driver Experience Switch. Additionally, the exhaust “burbling”
sound during engine overrun is not present.
This situation can occur after the vehicle is programmed or retrofitted with the M Performance Power and
Sound Kit prior to ISTA 4.08.1x.
Situation 2 only occurs on the following I-levels:

F020-16-07-5xx

F020-16-11-500

F020-16-11-501

CAUSE
Software errors in the Digital Motor Electronics (DME).
CORRECTION
Situation 1 (reduced engine power; warning lamps illuminate):
1. Read out I-level of the vehicle:
• If the I-level is less (lower) than F020-16-11-502:
Program and encode vehicle with ISTA.4.02.2x or a more recent version.
Model
Target I-Level
F30 (3 Series Sedan)
F020-16-11-502 or higher
F32 (4 Series Coupe)
F33 (4 Series Convertible)
F34 (3 Series Gran Turismo)
F36 (4 Series Gran Coupe)
• If the I-level is F020-16-11-502 or more recent (higher): Perform diagnosis with ISTA.
Situation 2 (no audible difference in the exhaust sound):
1. Read out I-level of the vehicle:
If the I-level is less (lower) than F020-18-11-551:

Note: the exhaust flap “teach-in” procedure described in the original SIB dated January 2018 is no
longer required.
Programming Notes:
Note that ISTA Next will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have
the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10 ).
For information on programming and coding with ISTA, refer to CenterNet / TIS / Technical Documentation /
Programming and Diagnostics / Programming Documentation.
PARTS INFORMATION
Parts replacement will not provide a solution to this situation.

Refer to KSD2/AIR
Program / encode control unit
If you are using a Main labor code for another repair, use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead of 00
00 006.
Refer to KSD2/AIR for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowances.
During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also
includes programming and encoding the control units, the programming procedure may only be invoiced one
time.
Vehicle Programming and Encoding
A. The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do
not have the latest software i-level. If one or more control module failures occur “during” this programming
procedure:
• Please claim this “consequential” control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this
bulletin with the applicable KSD2/AIR labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments
section.
B. For control module failures that occurred “prior” to performing this programming procedure:
• When “covered” under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work
using the applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in KSD2/AIR.
