This bulletin replaces S/B 17-016, Front Brake Noise (2016-17 RDX), and S/B 17-049, Brake Judder (2013–18 RDX)

SYMPTOM
The front brakes squeal when lightly applied. There may also be vibration through the steering wheel while braking.
PROBABLE CAUSE
The squeal or vibration in the brake system is caused by uneven pad wear and low brake disc hat rigidity.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the front brake discs and pads.
NOTE
If the noise is caused by normal pad wear, do not do this bulletin. Continue with normal system troubleshooting.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Did the vehicle come in for a high-pitched brake noise?
•
Yes - Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.
•
No - Go to step 2.
NOTE
If the noise is caused by normal pad wear, this bulletin does not apply; continue with normal system troubleshooting.
2. Did the vehicle come in for judder or vibration of the steering wheel?
•
Yes - Follow the procedure listed in the table below based on the vehicle and VIN.
•
No - This bulletin does not apply. Continue with normal system troubleshooting.

3. With the vehicle on a lift, remove both front wheels.

4. Inspect the supplier’s manufacturing date code on the brake discs.
•
If the brake disc hat stamping date is May 27, 2015 or later, and the casting core number in the vent slots is 11
or greater, this bulletin does not apply. Continue with normal system troubleshooting.
•
If the brake disc hat stamping date is earlier than May 27, 2015 or the casting core number is less than 11, go to
REPAIR PROCEDURE.
NOTE
The brake disc hat stamping date may be listed as a Julian date. A Julian date refers to a date that is a combination
of the current year and the number of days since the beginning of the year. In which case, May 27, 2015 will be
15147.

FNC INSPECTION
NOTE
If the noise is caused by normal pad wear, do not do this bulletin. Continue with normal system troubleshooting.
1. With the vehicle on a lift, remove both front wheels.
2. Check if the vehicle has FNC rotors.
NOTE
•
Keep in mind replacement front discs now come with Ferritic Nitrocarburizing (FNC) surface treatment, which
increases surface hardness and corrosion resistance. These discs can not be refinished and must always be
replaced when out of specification.
3. Does the vehicle have FNC brake discs?
•
Yes - This bulletin does not apply. Continue with normal system troubleshooting.
•
No - Go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Replace both front brake discs and brake pads. Refer to the service information for details.
NOTES
•
Keep in mind replacement front discs now come with Ferritic Nitrocarburizing (FNC) surface treatment, which
increases surface hardness and corrosion resistance. These discs can not be refinished and must always be
replaced when out of specification.
•
Make sure the pads are installed correctly. The chamfered inner pads have a wear indicator that should be
installed in the inner position with the indicator facing up.
2. Install all removed parts in the reverse order of removal.
