Technical Tips Technical Tip Topic 96-10-11TT – Reader Coil Test for Key Not Being Read and Fault 01128 Market area United States 444 Volkswagen of America, Inc. (6444) Brand Volkswagen Date September 19, 2017 Condition ATTENTION: THIS IS A TECH TIP, NOT A TECHNICAL BULLETIN. TECH TIPS ARE NOT ASSOCIATED WITH WARRANTY CLAIMING. Reader Coil Test for Key Not Being Read and Fault 01128 Model(s) Year Eng. Code Trans. Code VIN Range From VIN Range To All 1999-2005 All All All All Technical Background NA. Service To test the reader coil, begin by back probing one wire at the reader coil with the red DVOM test lead and ground the other meter test lead. Switch the ignition key ON and check the reading. The reading should be more than 80mV and then decline to ~70mV. A fault in the system will show less than ~20mV. Regardless of initial reading, gently remove the cluster (leave wiring attached) with ignition key ON. Monitor the voltage reading while wiggling the green cluster connector. If the reading fluctuates between ~70mV and ~20mV the cause may be a poor contact at the cluster connector. Replace the two reader coil wire terminals and retest. If there is no voltage when switching the key to the ON position, the immobilizer should be replaced. If the reading remains at ~20mV, test the reader coil resistance. Reader coil resistance should read between 18 and 24 ohms.
