Issue: The Check Engine Lamp is illuminated and, or, DTC P2170-11 is stored in the PCM.
Cause: To be determined. Potentially high resistance during activation of the active exhaust solenoid.
Action: Should you diagnose this concern, please perform the steps outlined below.
1. Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and check the active exhaust solenoid circuit for short to
ground, short to power, open circuit, or high resistance. Repair as necessary.
2. Remove the actuator and ensure the valve operates manually without excessive resistance.
3. Inspect the alignment of the heat shield, it should be centered on the valve. The image attached
would indicate misalignment of the heat shield.
4. Perform a software update to the PCM if available.
PCM Update instructions:
CAUTION: This procedure requires a minimum of Pathfinder 224 loaded or later.
NOTE: The Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) approved diagnostic equipment will read the Vehicle
Identification Number (VIN) for the vehicle and automatically take the vehicle out of ‘Transportation
mode’ if required.
Connect the JLR approved battery support unit.
Connect the JLR approved diagnostic equipment to the vehicle and begin a new session.
Follow the JLR approved diagnostic equipment prompts.
Select 'ECU Diagnostics'.
Select 'Powertrain control module [PCM]'.
Select 'Update ECU'.
Follow all on-screen instructions to complete the task.
If required, reset the vehicle to ‘Transportation mode’.
When all of the tasks are complete, exit the session.
Disconnect the JLR approved diagnostic equipment and the JLR approved battery support unit.
Please raise an EPQR and include details of the results after performing the diagnostic steps. The vehicle
can be released.
This SSM will be removed after a solution is developed and the Diagnostics and Testing section of the
workshop manual is updated.
