SITUATION
"Engine Malfunction loss of power" Check Control message (ID 29) appears when decelerating to a stop in
transmission mode "D3". Normal vehicle operation may be resumed after restarting the engine.
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may be illuminated with the following fault may be stored:

CAUSE
A software error in the digital motor electronics (DME).
Affected I Level: F020-18-07-531, F020-18-07-547, and F020-18-07-549
CORRECTION
Program the vehicle using ISTA 4.14.1x
PROCEDURE
1. Read out the I Level of the vehicle.
2. If the current I Level is F020-18-07-531, F020-18-07-547, or F020-18-07-549, program the vehicle to the
appropriate level shown below:

Note that ISTA Next will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have
the latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

During the same workshop visit, if a vehicle also requires another Technical Campaign or repair that also
includes programming and encoding the control modules, the programming procedure may only be invoiced
one time.
Programming and Encoding - Vehicle Control Units
A. The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do
not have the latest software i Level. If one or more control module failures occur "during" this
programming procedure:
- Please claim this "consequential" control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this
bulletin with the applicable AIR/KSD2 labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments
section.
B. For control module failures that occurred "prior" to performing this programming procedure:
- When "covered" under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work
using the applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in AIR/KSD2.
