STEERING WHEEL MOUNTED AUDIO
CONTROL MALFUNCTION
SUBJECT:
This bulletin provides the procedure to inspect and, if necessary, replace the clock spring
assembly on some 2014-2018MY Forte (YD/YDm) vehicles, produced from February 20, 2013
through June 30, 2018, which may experience intermittent malfunctioning steering wheel audio
controls due to a clock spring connector pin deformation, with no related DTCs for this concern.
Note: this does not impair the clock spring airbag function. Follow the procedure in this bulletin
to inspect the clock spring female connector and, if necessary, replace the clock spring
assembly.

Inspection Procedure:
1. Retain or record the customer’s radio
presets using a Memory Saver.
2.
Remove the Driver Airbag Module (A) by
referring to steps 1 through 5 of the
“Restraint → Airbag Module → Driver
Airbag (DAB) Module and Clock Spring
→ Repair procedures” chapter in the
applicable Shop Manual on KGIS.
WARNING
A
Failure
to
follow
general
precautions prior to performing
any airbag system service could
result in serious injuries.

Detach the clock spring male connector
(B).

Inspect the clock spring female
connector pins (C) for any deformation
(D).


5.
If any pin deformation is visible,
proceed
to
the
Replacement
Procedure on page 3.
If no pin deformation is visible, further
diagnosis or repair is required and not
covered in this bulletin. File a
separate claim if necessary. Perform
step 5 below after repair is
completed.
Verify customer’s radio presets were
retained or restore, if necessary, using
recorded information in step 1.

Replacement Procedure:
1.
Replace the clock spring by referring to
steps 6 through 8 of the “Restraint →
Airbag Module → Driver Airbag (DAB)
Module and Clock Spring → Repair
procedures” chapter in the applicable
Shop Manual on KGIS.
2.
Verify proper operation of the steering
wheel volume and other controls and
confirm no airbag-related warning lights
are on.
3.
Verify customer’s radio presets were
retained and restore, if necessary, using
recorded information in step 1 of the
Inspection Procedure.
