SERVICE ACTION: MY 2013 N63TU - PROGRAMMING
CONTROL UNITS; CBS ENGINE OIL SERVICE INTERVAL
Please perform the procedure outlined in this Service Information on all affected vehicles before customer
delivery. In the event the customer has already taken delivery of the vehicle, please perform the procedure the
next time the vehicle is in the shop.
This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B01 24 18 dated August 2018.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves 5, 6, and 7 Series vehicles equipped with N63TU engines, produced from 07/2012
to 07/2013 (13,660 cars are affected).
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in AIR,
the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
SITUATION
On the affected vehicles, the CBS engine oil service interval has been reduced to 1 year/10,000 miles to make
these vehicles consistent with all other N63x engine equipped vehicles.
The customer notification letter is attached.
CORRECTION
Conversion of the CBS engine oil interval (retrofit option code 08KL), program and encode the vehicle’s control
units.
PROCEDURE
1. Perform diagnosis with the latest version of, ISTA 4.16.1x or higher
2. Select “Modifications” tab

3. Under "Modifications", select and confirm the menu item "Modify oil maintenance interval 12
months/15000 km/10000 mi". Determine measures plan
4. Accept / fully work through the measures plan with the control units to be programmed/coded and, where
appropriate, enabled. The target integration levels after programing should be:

5. Carry out a vehicle test and delete the fault memory depending on the rework list, if required.
6. Reset the CBS engine service interval
7. Check the oil level and correct if required
Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the
latest software.
Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10).

Vehicle Programming and Encoding
A. The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do
not have the latest software i-level. If one or more control module failures occur “during” this programming
procedure:
• Please claim this “consequential” control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this

bulletin with the applicable KSD2/AIR labor operations.
Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments
section.
B. For control module failures that occurred “prior” to performing this programming procedure:
• When “covered” under an applicable limited warranty, claim this control module-related repair work
using the applicable defect code and labor operations (including diagnosis) in KSD2/AI
After the Engine Oil Service Retrofit is Completed, a CBS Data Reset and if applicable a CBS Correction
Must Be Performed.
The engine oil service interval calculation will now be based on 12 months or approximately 10,000 miles; one
of the following steps should be performed:
If the engine oil service task shows Recommended, Due or qualifies to be performed based on the “60day Bundling” procedure (see SI B01 06 13):

Perform the “Engine oil” Service task; and

“Reset” the CBS data to 100%.
If the engine oil service task does not show Recommended, Due or does not qualify to be performed
based on the “60-day Bundling” procedure:

Reset the engine oil service CBS data to 100%; and

Perform a CBS correction in order to reduce the engine oil service counter by one (1).
BMW Maintenance Program Engine Oil Service
If the vehicle has an “active” maintenance program, please submit and claim for the Recommended or Due
engine oil service (labor, engine oil and filter part numbers) under the BMW Maintenance Program (Defect
Codes).
Customer-Pay Engine Oil Service
If the engine oil service is customer pay, please give the customer the benefit of the three (3) liters of engine oil
that are claimable under the Service Action Defect Code listed above.

The new and improved software update for various control modules of your vehicle is available to be
installed, without any charge. Among other upgrades, the Condition Based Service oil change interval is
going to be reduced to 1 year / 10,000 miles. This new oil service interval will assure engine longevity.
After programming, your vehicle will be on the latest available software level, which will enhance
functionality, performance and driving experience of your vehicle.
Description of Repair
Your vehicle will be programmed with the newest engine control software. We kindly request that you
contact the service department of your authorized BMW center at your earliest convenience to arrange
an appointment. The staff will schedule an ideal time for you to drop off the vehicle. The actual repair
will require approximately two hours; however, additional time may be required depending on the
BMW center’s schedule. This work will be performed free of charge by your authorized BMW center.
Additional Information
If you are no longer the owner of this vehicle, please use the enclosed postage-paid postcard to provide
us with the name and address of the new owner. If you are a lessor of this vehicle, please forward this
letter to your lessee.
