Tech Tip T-TT-0523-19 Subject July 30, 2019 Market Highlander Stop & Start Battery Information Service Category Section Power Source/Network Battery/Charging USA Applicability Highlander with Stop & Start APPLICABLE VEHICLES 2017-2019 Highlander CONDITION Some 2017, 2018 and 2019 model year Highlanders are equipped with an engine Stop & Start system. It is important to use part number 28800-31550 when Stop & Start equipped Highlanders need battery replacement. There is no recommended Truestart battery that is applicable for Stop & Start Highlanders. The Stop & Start equipped battery is specially designed for deep discharges, and it is of a design called enhanced flooded battery (EFB). Characteristics of EFB type batteries are the ability to quickly discharge, and recharge. RECOMMENDATIONS Use the correct battery, part number 28800-31550. When testing batteries for Stop and Start equipped Highlanders use the battery type “enhanced flooded” or “EFB” using the battery tester. If you are not sure if the Highlander is equipped with Stop & Start functionality there are several ways to identify them. 1. Stop & Start is standard equipment on V6 Highlander LE PLUS, XLE, SE, and Limited models. 3. You can also identify the correct battery by looking at the battery label, which should have the part number 28800-31550. The battery manufacturer “GS Yuasa” can be seen on the front of the battery in raised letters, and on the battery label. It also has screw type vent caps, not press in vent caps.
