Special Service Message
NOTE: A Special Service Message is a formal communication issued by Land Rover and carries
the same importance of a Technical Service Bulletin. An SSM is a quick method of
communicating "Need To Know" information to the technical service community. SSM's may
be issued in advance of a technical bulletin or may be the only communication on a given
topic. All information contained in Land Rover technical communications are intended for
use by trained, professional technicians with the knowledge, tools, and equipment required
to complete the procedure correctly and safely. It informs the Technicians of conditions that
may occur on some vehicles, or provides information that could assist in correct vehicle and
diagnostic service.

Issue:
ARC Moan - Customer reports noise as a Hum / Whine
/ Moan. The noise typically occurs when the ARC
system is hot, ( fluid above 60 degC ) when coming to
rest and for up to 15 seconds after the vehicle
stops. The noise is generally heard between idle and
900rpm as a tonal noise, which may or may not change
frequency to a higher tone at around 800rpm.
Cause:
The noise is caused by the pre-load valve within the
valve block but the exact cause is not understood, it is
not detrimental to system performance but can be
annoying.
Action:
At this time the only repair action is to change the
valve block, however currently the service part may
exhibit the same issue. Changing other components in
the system will not fix the noise.
