Service Technical Information 29/13 ENU 9025 9 Eliminating Symptoms in Body Interior: Re-programming Instrument Cluster Control Unit (Failure of TFT display in instrument cluster/SY 29/13) Model Line: 911 (991) Boxster/Cayman (981) Model Year: As of 2012 up to 2014 Subject: TFT display in instrument cluster Symptom: Customer complains that the TFT display stops working after the vehicle has been parked for a long time in the sun or during a long trip. Cause: An error in the software can cause the TFT display to stop working under the specified conditions. Remedial Action: Re-program instrument cluster control unit. Date of Introduction: An instrument cluster with updated software is installed during production in all vehicles as of production date March 10, 2014. Parts Info: PCM3.1 Update CD (WKD95280015 or newer version) Tools: VAS 5908 - Battery Charger, 90 A 9900 - PIWIS Tester III NOTICE Fault entry in the fault memory and control unit programming aborted due to low voltage. • Increased current draw during diagnosis or control unit programming can cause a drop in voltage, which can result in one or more fault entries and the abnormal termination of the programming process. Before commencing work, connect a suitable battery charger or power supply, suitable for AGM type batteries, recommended current rating of 90A fixed voltage 13.5V to 14.5V. NOTICE Control unit programming will be aborted if the Internet connection is unstable. • An unstable Internet connection can interrupt communication between PIWIS Tester and the vehicle communication module (VCI). As a result, control unit programming may be aborted. During control unit programming, always connect PIWIS Tester to the vehicle communication module (VCI) via the USB cable. AfterSales Sep 10, 2019 Page 1 of 4 DRAFT 9 Service 9025 ENU Technical Information 29/13 NOTICE Control unit programming will be aborted if the vehicle key is not recognized • If the vehicle key is not recognized in vehicles with Porsche Entry & Drive, programming cannot be started or will be interrupted. Switch on the ignition using the original vehicle key. To do this, replace the original vehicle key in the ignition lock with the plastic key fob if it was previously removed at the start of this procedure. 1 Connect a battery charger with a current rating of at least 90 A. First connect the positive cable of the charger to the positive terminal of the battery and then connect the negative cable of the charger to the ground point for jump-lead starting. 2 Switch on the ignition using the original driver's key. For vehicles with “Porsche Entry & Drive”, replace the control panel in the ignition lock with the original driver’s key, if necessary. 3 9900 - PIWIS Tester III must be connected to the vehicle communication module (VCI) via the USB cable. Then, connect the communication module to the vehicle and switch on the PIWIS Tester. Work Procedure: Re-program instrument cluster control unit: 4 On the PIWIS Tester start screen, call up the 'Diagnostics' menu and select the relevant vehicle type. The diagnostic application is then started and the control unit selection screen is populated. 5 In the control unit selection screen ( 'Overview' menu), press •F7“ to call up the 'Additional menu'. 6 When the question “Create Vehicle Analysis Log (VAL)?” appears, either press •F12“ to create a VAL or press •F11“ if you do not want to create a VAL. 7 Press •>>“ to acknowledge the message informing you that campaigns for the vehicle are stored in the PIWIS information system. 8 Select the 'Campaign' function and confirm your selection by pressing •>>“. You are then prompted to enter a campaign number. 9 To enter the campaign number, click in the relevant text box so that the cursor starts to flash. 10 Enter the programming code C8K6B and press •Enter“ to confirm. The text box turns blue. Press •>>“ to start the guided programming sequence. Read the information and follow the prompts by pressing •>>“. Do not interrupt programming and coding. Information Software version of the instrument cluster after programming has been carried out successfully: 0373. 11 Once programming/coding has been carried out successfully, press •<<“ to return to the overview. 12 Switch off the ignition. 13 Disconnect the PIWIS Tester from the vehicle. 14 Information The values for the Tire Pressure Monitoring (TPM) system may be lost during re-coding of the instrument cluster. If the Tire Pressure Monitoring (TPM) system is reset, you must select Main menu > Tire pressure > Settings in the instrument cluster to reset the tire type and tire size. The wheel position values will then be re-taught in the control unit during the test drive (at a speed of over 15 mph or25 km/h). To set the tire type and tire size, see Owner’s Manual, chapter Instrument Panel and Multi-Function Display - ‘Tire Pressure Monitoring, TPM’. 15 On vehicles with Porsche Entry & Drive, replace the original vehicle key in the ignition lock with the control panel again. Invoicing The work involved is invoiced under the labor operation: • 90252510: Re-programming instrument cluster control unit For invoicing and documentation using PQIS, specify “90250” as the fault location (FES5) and “4042” as the damage category (SA4).
