INFORMATION For the eligible vehicles, BMW of North America, LLC (BMW NA) is extending the limited warranty for the bolts for the electric motor of the power steering gear to: 10 Years/120,000 Miles This EPS electric motor mounting bolt-specific limited warranty extension applies to defects in materials or workmanship. This coverage is subject to the same vehicle eligibility requirements, limitations, and exclusions that apply to the BMW New Vehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars and Light Trucks. Important Note: Beyond 4/50, any other EPS steering gear failures that also require the assembly to be replaced are NOT covered under the terms of this assembly component-specific no time (age) or mileage coverage. Note: This bulletin is notice of a limited warranty extension. This is NOT a notice of a Recall or Service Action. There is no immediate repair required unless the BMW vehicle is currently experiencing this problem. Customer Notification Letter Even though this is NOT a Recall, BMW NA will be sending VIN-specific customer notification letters in a phased release. SITUATION There are front end noises when turning the steering wheel and/or there is limited power steering assist when maneuvering or parking the vehicle. CAUSE For the basic steering gears, one possible cause is that the mounting bolts for the electric motor may become loose, missing and/or broken due to corrosion. CORRECTION The steering gear is to be replaced if one or more of the five (5) screws/bolts are either loose, missing, and the: Bolts are not broken (DC 32 10 90 02 00); or the Bolts are broken (DC 32 10 90 39 00). Document the status of bolts on the repair and in the claim comments. Disconnect the battery according the REP 61 20 900. 2. Remove the front underbody protection according to REP 51 47 490. 3. Visually inspect the (5) screws securing the power pack to the steering gear. 4. If any of the screws in the five (5) indicated locations are found loose, missing or sheared off, replace the steering gear. 5. Following repair instructions REP 32 13 572, replace the steering gear. 6. Following repair instructions REP 32 00 155, perform a wheel alignment. 7. Reconnect the battery. 8. Connect the vehicle to ISTA/D and perform a vehicle test. 9. Work through the measures plan and program the vehicle using ISTA 4.12.30 or higher. Target integration level F020-18-07-531 or higher Note that ISTA will automatically reprogram and code all programmable control modules that do not have the latest software. Always connect a BMW-approved battery charger/power supply (SI B04 23 10). 10. Delete the fault memory. 11. For vehicles with sports suspension settings, install the underride protection. 12. Install the front underbody protection according to REP 51 47 490. Applicable Models vehicles that are beyond the 4 year/50,000 Mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty but still within 10 year/120,000 mile Extended Limited Warranty The EPS electric motor mounting bolt-specific limited warranty extension to the 10 years/120,000 miles limit applies to eligible US-specification BMW vehicles registered, operated and have their covered repair performed by an authorized BMW center in the United States (including Puerto Rico). The existing limited warranty coverage for the whole vehicle, other components or the EPS steering gear (for non-mounting bolt-related issues) have not changed. Only for EPS electric motor mounting bolt-related failures, this coverage supersedes the coverage that is provided under the BMW Certified Pre-Owned Program or any BMW Group Vehicle Service Contract that applies to the vehicle. Programming and Encoding - Vehicle Control Units A. The programming procedure automatically reprograms and encodes all vehicle control modules which do not have the latest software i-level. If one or more control module failures occur during this programming procedure: Please claim this consequential control module-related repair work under the defect code listed in this bulletin with the applicable AIR labor operations. Please explain this additional work (The why and what) on the repair order and in the claim comments section. B.
