SUBJECT: Pentastar Upgrade Oil Fill Level after an Oil Change OVERVIEW: This bulletin involves rechecking the oil fill level after filling the engine to the correct specifications. MODELS: 2016 2016 2017 2019 2018 2020 - 2020 2020 2020 2020 2020 (WK) (WD) (RU) (DT) (JL) (JT) Jeep Grand Cherokee Dodge Durango Chrysler Pacifica RAM 1500 Pickup Jeep Wrangler Jeep Gladiator NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles within the following markets/countries: North America, LATAM, APAC and EMEA. NOTE: This bulletin applies to the listed vehicles above equipped with the 3.6L Pentastar Upgrade Engines (Sales Codes ERC or ERG). SYMPTOM/CONDITION: The customer may describe that after an oil change they check their oil fill level and it is showing overfilled on the oil dipstick. DISCUSSION: The 3.6L Pentastar Upgrade engine typically uses a smaller oil pan for most applications versus the 3.6L Pentastar Classic, resulting in an engine oil capacity of five (5) quarts for the Upgrade engine. The 3.6L Pentastar Upgrade engine has a slower oil drain back rate. After filling the engine to the correct oil capacity per specifications listed in the service information, the oil level may show low on the oil dipstick due to the slower drain back rate. Engine crankcase overfilling can occur if not enough time is allowed for the engine oil to drain back into the oil pan. DO NOT ADD MORE OIL THAN SPECIFIED IN THE PUBLISHED SERVICE INFORMATION. When identifying a 3.6L Pentastar Upgrade engine, the Upgrade engine has an EGR cooler mounted to one of the cylinder heads, and a Variable Valve Lift (VVL) solenoid on the front of each valve cover. NOTE: There are currently a couple of exceptions to the above statement: 2016-to-Current Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK) and Dodge Durango (WD), equipped with the 3.6L Upgrade engine have a unique oil pan size and configuration that give them an engine oil capacity of six (6) quarts. 04-001-19 -2- CAUTION! Refer to the published service information to verify correct oil capacity specifications for the specific vehicle being worked on as oil pan sizes and configurations may change. CAUTION! Ensure the oil level is correct before releasing the vehicle to the customer. POLICY: Information Only
